In my eyes, Burlesque is an art, a craft that is learned, polished and constantly evolving. An art that showcases talent of all kinds and brings people together who all share an interest in the same thing. I love this about Burlesque, I love the diversity and the sense of a worldwide community that allows performers to travel and unites us all through a common passion.
Sitting here, writing this, is allowing me to look back at my life before Burlesque and my life now. I whole heartedley believe in a set path that we are destined to follow, a path that will lead us from birth to death. It may not be a straight path, or an easy one but its there, waiting for us to find and follow it. Its true that there will always be people with sharp elbows ready to shove us off of it, but with courage its an easy step to take to put us back on track. I understand that this isn't everyone's view, but it's mine and it helps keep me moving in tough times and easy ones.
In Burlesque there seem to be a fair number of 'sharp elbows' and any seasoned performer knows to expect it. There are always people ready to pull out the weight or age card and even the expense card. I can't even vocalise how cross this makes me, in overlooking a performer for her size, his age or their fees show prducers and audiences alike are missing out on real talent. Afterall, age brings experince, size is neither here nor there and quality costs.
I'm proud to have made the life choices that I have, to be a performer by profession and to continue to produce the work that I do. I continue to grow as a performer and a person, I will always be a curvaceous size 12, I will always get older and I will never be free. All this and one other will never change, I will always perform from the heart. The day I stop loving what I do will be the day I stop.
