Bit of burlesque reading?
I thought I would share this doctoral thesis I am currently reading through. It looks at some of the history of burlesque, its varying incarnations, how it relates to cultural commentary and feminism, inclusiveness and its position as relates to other performance arts... anyway, dead interesting stuff for anyone who wants some bedtime reading, lots and lots of bed time reading.

God I wish I were doing a dissertation on burlesque! I love the theoretical, social, cultural side as much as the performing. Unfotunately it's a long time since I graduated (with a degree that has been as much use as chocolate tit-tape) so no researching fun for me! Except researching for my own interest.
Although, I have found a uni that offers a Theatre Studies Degree as a correspondance course so if I can ever scrape the money together this research could be put to good use after all!
BTW Did anyone else find the section on Suicide Girls really interesting. I have always been a little uncomfortable with the whole Suicide Girls thing and when I first got into burlesque a lot of people I knew criticised me and said that they were 'the same thing'. It was really interesting seeing the author's take on this and where she drew her distinctions.
Anyone who hasn't read this yet definately should, I've found it impossible to put down!

I've not read a lot of it yet - I'm saving it for a quiet night in.
I did a section on Suicide Girls for my dissertation about pin up art (I surveyed you lot if you remember, about this time last year) and analysing it and learning more about it really just left me cold... I used to have an account, which is active at the moment actually, because I got a random free re-trial... but it just doesn't appeal to me the way that it did when I was eighteen or whatever. I'm just finding it shallow, there's none of the uniqueness that they promise with their advertising shpiel. Most of the girls just look the same.

gosh, i love geek reading! thanks for the link. I wish I'd done my dissertation on burlesque
Im doing mine on Columbina from the Commedia Dell Arte, who I like to think of as the Grandmother of Burlesque!
Italian Comedy | Commedia dell'Arte | Servetta | Soubrette | Colombina
She is my geek.
I am not domestic, I am a luxury, and in that sense, necessary.
