    Default Breaking into Burlesque

OK, so I have finally made the step after 5 long years of skirting around the Burlesque scene with my togging, costume making and a spot of maiding and of course being a huge Burlesque enthusiast, I have decided to give it a whirl. I have had the desire for such a long time but never had the confidence (partly with being a larger girl and almost 34)...well new man new found confidence shall we say

I am not going into it with my eyes closed or expecting to be a career performer. I want to prove to myself I can do it and have fun! *I am so bloody excited lol*

I have had so much support from my Burly friends, and great advice including how to twirl the old tassels from Mrs Fur Laxis and blimey...they will need to hand out crash helmets to the first 2 rows when I get these babies going hehe

I have 3 'almost' polished acts, and now feel I am *nearly* ready to perform. After all, I can hardly call my self a performer if the only people to see my acts are my boyfriend and the cats!...but they love it (I made small crash helmets for the cats

So now..the mission I have is to get someone to book me, a novice with no official training or experience lol I feel it's going to be a big task, but does anyone have any advice on breaking my duck as it were?

I'm at pretty much the same point as you. Just by chance someone that knows I have been getting into burlesque has asked me to perform at their private party in March, so I'm concentrating on that for now. But, yeah, after that... I am hoping that I can make some good contacts locally and maybe get a newbie slot somewhere.

Actually I've noticed that newbie slots are quite often advertised on her in the jobs section, so I guess it's a case of applying to the ones that are close enough to get to, etc.

Good luck fellow newbie!! And I love your profile pic btw!

I know you're in Leeds, so this might still be a bit too far off to get to - but this is a recent job post that might be a possibility?

Contact the promoter of your local Burly nights (or any others you are prepared to travel to), they often have newcomer slots. They may want to see a video of your performance so it is worth making one (good just for you to watch anyway and see what it looks like).

Also write yourself a promotional blurb, describing you and your style, and outlining what makes you different. Remember you are selling yourself so need a unique selling point.

Good luck with it and I hope you love it as much as I do! (I have performed 3 times now).
