Hullo Holli-Mae,
I occassionally dabble in web-weaving so might be able to sort you out with something. At the moment I'm doing a bit of a re-design/update on a previous site I made for someone but that shouldn't take me *too* long to sort-out.
PM me if you're interested - my portfolio site is at www.itsmisscarrie.com if you want to have a look. The 'Online' content is up there, although I've just redesigned the whole site so some other stuff is still to be added (really just my printed work).

Hi all,
I'm resurrecting this thread as I'm looking for a website designer myself for my personal performer site.
Like Holli, I'm looking for something in a retro/vintage/theatrical vein.
Any and all suggestions welcome!
H xx

There are lots of self-build sites out there - point and click stuff?
I build websites for lots of people on the island using software that they *know* they could learn to use, but frankly, they don't want to take downtime from their business, so it works out cheaper for them to pay me to do it for them! I've now got business from folk I don't know, in England and France, so the end result must be quite nice :-)
My website building package of choice is sitemaker, as sold by webeden.
www.webeden.co.uk .
You can build and launch your site for free - with ads. But a basic site costs about £25 pa for ad-free hosting, more if you fancy a shop facility. They're uk-based :-). you can also buy your domain name from them.
Also, if you are looking for great images for your site, try istockphoto - they can supply you with royalty free images of every stripe. You can use these images on business cards, flyers etc - but you mustn't resell the image - as if the image is YOURS (ie like a poster to sell or an image on a mug) unless you've purchased that right.
Of course, using a professional website designer will give you many more options, but at least if you check out the other options, you can go to your pro website designer knowing that you've checked out the alternatives and that this is REALLY what you want.

Thanks Alix, very helpful stuff!
I know what my personal limitations are when it comes to design, and although I have a clear idea of what I want for my site in terms of look and user experience (down to approximate load times etc.), I know I don't have the time to learn the skills I would need to create it myself.
You make a good point about checking out all the options first though, which I will definitely do.
