I have just read a story in the Brughton Argus that the council want to crackdown on raunchy behaviour in the town! This could affect Burlesque and the Fringe. It will be discussed on thursday 24th and if approved have a 12 week consultion process!!

This is happening all over at the moment after the new licensing about lap dancing and such was passed in April. Councils are now discussing whether they are going to opt into the new scheme (to licence lap dance clubs as sexual entertainment establishments). The outline is pretty woolly, so everyone, including councils, are a bit confused about what it means they can and cant do. W
What they can do: require lap dance clubs and burlesque clubs to apply for a license which they may refuse.
What they cant do: require a licence from any event that runs 11 or less times a year, and once or month or less. So this means that most burlesque nights are safe. If there is nudity they can veto this and require that strippers wear g-strings etc.
There might be a period where they investigate burlesque and nudity in art but they can do much about one-off arts and burly events. Their chief concern is lap dance clubs. I will be keeping an eye on this one- luckily there are lots of well informed artists ready to spell out to the councils what they can and cant do.

How utterly ridiculous and it highlights the misconception that a lot of people seem to have about burlesque and the culture of burlesque. It explains why we have threads with performers worrying about, (or even saying that they have already) lost their jobs or been in trouble at work because of performing.
Burlesque my be erotic, but as I perceive it, it can be a lot of other things too... comedy, mime, acrobatics, gymnastics, high dance, drama... need I go on? It's a very traditional theatre art and people should be made aware of this.
A prudish attitude towards entertainment in this day and age is silly and no one will be able to 'crack down' on lewd behaviour by censoring performance. They'll be banning plays with nudity in next...
'sorry Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet's been axed... teenagers getting married, not in my theatre!!'
