Do You Live Your Persona?
I'm new to all this so I'm not sure my answer to this question yet. I became curious about your answers when I ditched the cupid's bow and smoky eyes in favour of pink lipstick with punky bright blue and yellow eyeshadow today, throwing on a long yellow vest and pirate pants.
So, my question is...
Do you dress like your burly alter ego all the time? Or do you dress in a similar vintage way but toned down? Or do you wear alternative style clothes (punky, metal-y, whatever) or, because of a job or maybe because you like to blend in, do you dress conservatively when not performing?WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

I tend to wear vintage or retro clothing every day, my make up is the same too. And I always have my hair done well!
I know a lot of people tend to change but myself I feel I am me all the time on and off stage.

I dress in a vintage style every day (makeup and hair included). For me though the dressing in a vintage style came first and my burlesque persona came second.

I don't do drag every day, although it is something I did/a persona I had long before I let him take to the cabaret stage! I'd be too uncomfortable to bind myself up everyday, although I would like to!
I do have very ecclectic dress sense and can look very different from day to day, and I love to reinvent myself and wear different styles when the mood takes me. It's all part of how I like to be creative, I guess.
I wear boring work clothes for my job, but the first thing I do is get changed when I get home in the evening! During holiday times, I lock the work clothes up in a seperate wardrobe where I don't have to see them for weeks! :-)

I don't dress like my persona from day to day at all.I think half the fun is getting all dressed up/ made up to perform, makes that extra bit fun. I think I'd get fed up of it if I did it every day.

I would love to wear gorgeous vintage clothes and fix my hair and make-up every day, but the reality is that with 4 children to look after, 2 dogs to walk, 7 chickens to muck out I would ruin good clothes pretty quickly!
I think as well, I love the feeling of getting dressed up as my alter ego for a night out, or a performance, I wonder if that would loose it's magic if it was something I did every day?Raspberry Ripples - Your just desserts!

I agree! I am training to be a massage therapist so, by July I'll spend my daytimes in the regulation white uniform and shoes. Plus, any vintage clothing would get covered in sweet almond oil! Its getting into character that's a lot of fun. xx

I love how this thread has taken off!
I have always been a quirky dresser and experimented with make up and my hair so I never look plain and I don't think I ever will! I don't think I will ever be like Anna Furlaxis or Immodesty Blaize though, who seem to dress in vintage all day wherever they are. I think the more high profile you are, the more likely your stage persona is to merge a little with who you really are and then you start dressing that way in real life.
I think I'll be something like Amanda Palmer, circa early Dresden Dolls - during the day I'll dress in a unique and interesting way, borrowing elements from different styles, but with a couple of signature things that remain from my act (her example would be those eyebrows)and when performing I will wear a very specific series of very vintage outfits, highly stylised and all in the sepia colour scheme I have given myself (her colour scheme, of course, was black and white, but that has been done to death)."The Voluptuous Vaudevillian Voice"

I suppose with myself having red hair I tend to stand out in the crowed even on a bad day, I have always liked to take care of my image personally due to the fact I care what people think about me. Weather or not this is an egotistical thing I am unsure I am not vein or big headed I just like to pay attention to detail.
I suppose it's the same as being true to myself, I would feel cheated if I didn't take care in how I looked at work or of a week day then of a weekend or performance night changed into my Spankalicious image.
For me there is not much difference in changing how I look to match my aliciouness.
I must say I don't walk about in feathers and rhinestones on a day to day basis, but i shop about to experiment with myself. I feel I have many different sides to myself and feel happy to show them, what is nice is that I am supported and lucky enough to do so within my Job as well.

I tend to dress rather vintage in styling though more often than not am wearing something that would make Bette Lynch swoon with excitment -leopard print galore. I am a rockabilly loving lass at heart.
I am not sure if I am dressing like my stage persona though...flaunting about in my sparkly undercrackers in the management meetings may not go down to well with the boss. I am sure the boys would love it. Plus nipple tassels arent work friendly....
