"I wish I were a Warhol silk screen hanging on the wall. Or little Joe or maybe Lou. I'd love to be them all. All New York's broken hearts and secrets would be mine. I'd put you on a movie reel, and that would be just fine. "

Newcomer's Section: Introductions & Newbie Questions
Hey everyone,
so I couldn't find the newbie thread so I thought I'd just start out on my own thread.
I'm 18 right now, looking to get in to burlesque at the end of my college education. I'm in love with Catherine D'lish, Paloma Faith an Elizabeth Taylor. they are such inspirations to me. I've recently bought a corset and I'm starting to tightlace. I love the who burlesque style. I love art and painting and the whole burlesque scene is so attractive to me.
I'll be honest this is a shameless ask for your kind ideas on the best way to get in to burlesque. especially as I don't want to go down the wrong route artistically, e.g. strip clubs. I'm interested even in backstage positions because I just love the whole atmosphere.
Also out of interest what do you all think about my age, how old were you went you started out?
ta very much for any help <3

I started when I was 19 at my university, as long as you are over 18, and feel comfortable and not pressured into doing it your age should not be a problem! We had a society where we learned basic burlesque and put on shows and various girls have taken it further.
Where are you based? I would say the best way to get into burlesque is to get into a scene rather than particuarly going to classes. Look at on the casting pages here for Maiding jobs local to you, offer your time for free, get some inspiration and meet like minded folk. Also, try and see if there is a Group or society near you such as the North West Burlesque Society, or even local university societies (In my experience you dont always have to be a member of the uni to become part of the society).
The reason I put these before going to lessons is because sometimes the lessons aren't run by the appropriate people and you may find the mentality of the group is not as serious as you would like it to be, also once you have completed the course you may feel that the teacher washes their hands of you and the other girls go back to whatever they normally do. In my opinion it is much better to find one or two really passionate people you can socialize and learn with.
That being said, there are some fantastic classes around the country run by great performers and you may feel more confident with a group of people starting out with you! There is a thread here and here of Classes. (Look at the Learning Burlesque part of the forum)
Hope this helps!

Hi there!
My name is Gail and, although I'm not a performer (yet) I'm keen to be involved with the scene. I suppose at the moment I'm more of a behind the scenes girl making hair pieces and hats.
I love Gypsy Rose Lee, Anna Fur Laxis and Bettie Page. I don't have a burlesque name yet...perhaps you can help me find one?
