Thread: Costume design....

Hey guys and dolls,

Hope you're all having a good start to the week! I wonder if anyone may be able to have a few ideas, from your experiences, on a costume I want to make.

I'm working a new act that kind of came from watching my beautiful flowers in the kitchen bloom and then drop their leaves. I thought it would be wonderful to be able to recreate that for a burlesque act - turning it into a kind of cheeky he "loves me / loves me not" type idea.

So, my grandplan is to make a multiple layered skirt which would look like rose petals. They would be in full bloom, so the petals would reach above my head and then as the song progresses I take off and drop some of the petals as a striptease.

I think the only way to do it might be to create a hooped skirt, then create the petals out of wire with hooks on them and cover them in red material. That way I could slowly start to bend the petals and drop them.

Any ideas if anyone has had to create something similar?

I know that Lena Mae has an act called 'Certain Words', but I cant find a video - want to make sure Im not copying. Anyone seen the act?

I could be wrong but what immediately springs to mind is to make them from chicken wire into petal shapes then cover it with something, like a thin layer of netting? then fill it with more netting/foam/pillow fluff (will which give it the fullness and make it bendy still) and then cover the finished product with material. I really like the idea, it's kind of like .. peek-a-boo .. i'm behind the petals! You could make a cage skirt and attach them to it. x

I've not yet had Certain Words filmed,(am booked to so next month) - but it sounds pretty different to your idea. I pick whole flowers from my body, I myself am not the flower

Lovely to hear from you - just watched Millicent Binks video and decided to get in touch with her - I still like the idea but want to make sure that I make it look and feel completely different and see if its viable before I go any further!
