make your own ostrich fans workshop ... would there be interest ?
Hi all,
since i set up in business, i've been absolutely bombarded with emails asking if i will ever be doing workshops teaching people how to make their own ostrich fans. But ive always resisted, as they were previously the main source of my income and i didnt want to give away my secrets !
However, as im now moving into lingerie ( and the emails are getting more and more !), ive started to think of it as a possibility.
So i was wondering what the interest would be ?
Would you want to make a large set of fans or a small one ?
Would you be happy making just one fan, and taking away your skills to make the other one ?
Would you rather pre-order your materials, to ensure you get the desired colour and style ?
Or would you be happy taking potluck on the day ?
How much would you think is a reasonable cost ( excluding cost of materials) ?
I would appreciate the feedback - its something im considering, but not sure if there's much demand for it.
You can see examples of my ostrich fans here : Sugarlesque
Thanks for the feedback !

I would love to do this.
I personally would like to get my own materials (if you could point us the right direction).
Would like to make sets and I would prefer to learn how to make large fans.
Im not sure on what would be the right amoount to charge if people provided their own materials? Maybe base the charge on the amount of time the workshops would take and also to make it worth your while.
Hope this is of some help to you.

Hi huni. I think it would be a wonderful idea. I have been trying to find the equipment that I need to make fans so that I can sell them to my friends but im struggling with it. I have never made a pair myself so it would be great to have someone show me how to do it. I was going to start a thread the other day asking about suppliers of feathers and staves...so if you have any information on that then I would greatly appreicate it.
If you did do a class where would it be based?
I think you should show people how to do one fan and then leave them to do the other one at home. Pre ordering the equioment would be the best way as long as people paid a 50% deposit or something.
Let me know if you go ahead with it xx

yep. I agree, just for practicality reasons - i was thinking of using the class to guide people through making one small fan, then providing them with the links to get the rest of the materials so they can finish in their own time. To have everyone make a pair of large fans would become very expensive for the participants.
What areas is everyone based in ?
Im based in London, and so that's where the 1st workshop would be, but im open to suggestions if there is a market for this elsewhere around england ...
maybe if i offer more than one booking option ... ?
eg. if you have your own materials / if you want to make one fan / if you want to make 2 small fans / if you want to make a large pair .. varying depending on price, then it's up to you to choose the best option for you.
is this a good idea, or too convoluted ?

On thinking about this. I think it would be more practical to make 1 small or large fan and then complete the set in our own time.
I would be happy to travel to london.
Im based in sheffield but i don't think there is too much of a market for workshop of this sort in the area.
Hope this helps.

I think small fan first of all is the best way forward.
Im based up north so it would be tricky to get down to London. However if it was a weekend then me and a few friends could come down for the day.
What sort of pricing are you looking at...obviously I understand that you have to cover material and premise renting cost.

I think its a great idea. It always helps me to see someone doing something rather than following written instructions! Another Northerner here so perhaps there would be scope for classes in this area xxxx
