    Default Cyd Charisse : 1921 -2008

This makes me so very sad, Cyd Charisse passed away this evening aged 86...

She is the reason I began dance classes as a kid and I always wished she had the same sucess as Ginger Rogers, I felt Cyd was the better dancer. Who doesn't want to be that awesome woman with the hat on her foot and gene kelly at her knees?

You've probably seen her in Singin in The Rain, but she was also in Ziegfield Follies

Here's my two favourite dances, I'm off to watch Bandwagon and cry into my popcorn

YouTube - The Band Wagon - Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse
YouTube - Gene Kelly & Cyd Charisse - from singin' in the rain

oh couldn't resist it's so pretty

    xx

p.s. check out fred astaire precursing micheal jackson in the bandwagon video! always love pointing that out

Oh my gosh, that is very sad. Cyd Charisse was a legend, and Gene Kelly's partner of choice. That man would write and choreograph a completely arbitrary dream sequence for her.

She was wonderful, it goes without saying she was the superior dancer, she was superior in that aspect to most of the leading ladies at that time.

Good old age though, she had a good run.

    Bless her

I'd just come on here to post just that exact post Amelie.
She was an absolutely amazing dancer, and incredibly beautiful. I heard once she was the first woman in Hollywood to have her legs insured for $1m.

Here's to a beautiful, talented woman who shall be remembered fondly for the joy she brought us.

I heard this too, had so many e-mails about it as well.
There is one very funny moment that was captured on television, in the fifties I think, and I know I've seen it, damn, why didn't I put it in my favourites? Probably because there's so much clutter in there already. Anyway, Cyd was being interviewed when she was asked what Cyd was short for. "Cydney of course!" she replied.
Vic, I would say, that it would be unfair to compare Cyd with Ginger, or with anyone else, they were both very talented, made what did look effortless and were good friends. Ginger spent the last two years of her life wheelchair bound, and it was Cyd who always visited her, took her out, never forgot her.
Cyd Charisse, you were my inspiration. May you rest in peace.

I almost threw something at our radio today when the ignorant presenters said they had no idea who was.

I've never been a dancer but always used to swirl around the living room when her movies were on pretending I was.

She had the greatest legs ever.

I love Dancing in the Dark from Bandwagon - swirly swirly skirt (see told you I wasn't a dancer, but I know when something is wonderful to watch)
The Russian Doll Lass - like Shrek's onion, but with sequins...

She certainly had great legs. Even our lovely Fleur du Mal would be jealous of Cyd's legs.
Here she is, early on in her career dancing with Ricardo Montalban. Enjoy.

Beautiful and elegant even in to her old age
    Photos of Cyd Charisse

My heart goes out to her handsome and talented husband Tony Martin. They had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 15/05/08.
