Pretty Things by Liz Goldwyn is right up your alley, Gypsy the musical as well. I didn't start doing burlesque until I left the states but I saw a burlesque show in the South and to say it wasn't quite accepted might be an understatement. Not because it was too rauncy but because it wasn't raunchy enough - i think it's full stripper or nothing in that part of Alabama, so the pasties were a disappointment to the crowd. Makes me glad I waited to cross the pond before I dove into it.

It might be worth reading a couple of texts on interview techniques and then getting in touch with a couple of American performers to find out first-hand about the contemporary affects/impact of the burlesque tradition. Skype's a great way of chatting person-to-person if an email interview/questionnaire is too time-consuming. x

ooh and I forgot - as a starting point, listening to some of the legends on Burlesque Podcast will definitely give you an insight to how burlesque has changed or not in living memory and some social issues (and then you could try contacting them as Beatrix suggested) - the episodes that spring to mind are with Gyna Rose Jewel, Satan's Angel and April May.
