An update on my first burlesque
So some of you had asked for an update after my show and here it is.
I wondered at first if my show was cursed because I had almost a completely different performer line up at the time of the show than what I started with almost 3 months ago but we had the best show and the best audience last saturday night! I was so nervous right up until the last act went on, I just couldn't relax.
My emcee called me the morning of the show to tell me there was a death in his immediate family so he was not able to come out that night, understandably.
Thankfully I had secured the services of an improv comedy guy and he saved the show by taking over as emcee and was fabulous! We had comedy improv that involved audience participation that went over extremely well. All but one of the performers kicked but with there performances.
I definitely learned a few things in the process though. Just because someone says they have worked with big names does not mean that they are a good performer. Unfortunately one girl decided the best thing she could do was drink...a lot before her act. She was a folk singer and if she hadn't been drinking she would have been fine but she just seemed to be randomly singing words (if anyone is familiar with the series 'Friends', think drunk Phoebe Bouffet). She then proceeded to wander the stage and audience for the rest of the show despite our attempts to get her out. I have never wanted one of those long shepherds hooks so bad in my life!
It didn't seem to detract from the show though, people remember her but because she was soooo over the top they just laugh about it.
I also learned that while glitter in the balloons for the balloon dance looked awesome, it was a pain in the arse to clean up. so no glitter in the future!!
I heard nothing but good things from everyone and have had a few requests to be advised of the next show.
I'm on the fence a bit as to whether I really want to do another show but I do have more people interested in helping out. I feel a bit like the chicken in the Little Red Hen fable, now that things have turned out successful everyone wants to be involved but no one wanted to commit to much before that.
We managed to sell about 80 some seats of our 143 and raised around $800CAD. We also have encouraged quite a few to take some time out of their day to write to the troops fighting in Afghanistan and other places so I'd say we accomplished what we set out to do. I'm looking forward to getting our photo's printed and mailed out!!

Well done thats fantastic! It's great when a show pulls together really well. I remember I hired an act once that was supposed to be really good, they spent 20 mins on stage basically standing there, everyone was falling asleep. Now I wish they were drunk, it would have livened it up a bit hehe.

Congratulations Punkn! I'm so glad it went well for you.
It may have been a bit stressful at times, but at least you learnt lessons, as you said.
I'm sure, if you do decide to do it again, any future shows will be even more of a success now that you have the experience under your belt.
Congratulations hun!

That's fantastic. Great it went well for you. I'd probably locked the drunk Phoebe in the ladies. Very pleased for you, it shows how good you are when you can deal with things like that and you have done brilliantly.

Thanks! I am pretty proud of myself. The DJ we had apparently called a friend to tell him he needed to come down to the show to see the burlesque show and his friend told him he had seen burlesque and wasn't really interested. The DJ told him that he had to come and see this, he's seen plenty of burlesque shows and then there was ours.

Makes me feel pretty good about it for sure.
I think the act that was the favourite, if that is even possible as they were all good with the one exception, was our librarian act. We had two girls come out as librarians with a big book and did a mad lib. It was hilarious, for every word the audience gave them they took off a piece of clothing.
As soon as we get the video edited a bit I'll post the link but you can see pictures on our myspace page, MySpace.com - London Pin Ups - 32 - Female - CA - www.myspace.com/londonpinups
