Apologies for Site Downtime
Hi everyone, apologies if you noticed that the site just went down for a little while. At first we thought it was the particle accelerator experiment but it turns out that they updated some server components without telling us. (always nice to kept informed, isn't it!)
Everything should be back to normal now, unless of course the world does end in which case the site will probably go down again but we shall endeavour to resurrect it in the world to come.WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

Ok, without the aid of a safety net, and probably about be shouted at by various scientists for being simplistic, but here I go with an explanation...
The Higgs boson is the sort of holy grail to particle physicists that they could well discover as part of the CERN experiment. It's as yet undiscovered (though I still swear I found one down the back of my settee and it's not a dust ball) though scientists have theorised about its existence. It supposedly creates a field that attracts other particles (protons, neutrons etc) and therefore gives them mass. The Higgs boson has been nicknamed the God particle because of it's imparting of mass to other particles - but it is incredibly elusive (CERN tried to find it back in 2000 and I think it was first talked about in the 60s...possibly) and Stephen Hawkin has supposedly said he would a huge amount of money on them not finding it when the Large Hadron Collider is switched on.
Basically, looking for bosons give scientists hadrons.....The Russian Doll Lass - like Shrek's onion, but with sequins...
