Congratulations everyone !!
hello peeps ,
i have been known to go off on a rant in the recent past about the quality and ingenuity of many burlesque acts . . griping that it takes more than peeling your clothes off to pull off a good act !!
but since then i have seen less and less of the frilly knicker brigade and many more inspiring, interesting , skilled, theatrical and beautifull acts.
Congratulations .
i don't know if thats because everyone is maturing , or if all the frilly knicker brigade have given up and gone home ( or moved on to the next fad ).
anyone have any thoughts , observations ?
BW

I suppose the scene is different and also 'newer' where I am (the Netherlands) but I recently went to a (mainly music, but supposedly 'culture') festival where there was also a burlesque show. The advertisement in the festival leaflet sounded wonderful, but both I and my friend were quite disappointed. Most of the acts were quite boring I daresay, and they mostly lacked any kind of theme, speciality or wit/humour (it was really mainly taking their clothes off, there wasn't even much 'tease' - it's not teasing when you just quickly rip it all off is it?). As the scene is rather small I have only recently been actively researching burlesque nights and such and hope to get a 'bigger idea' soon which is hopefully more positive!

Maybe it is a "knee jerk" reaction Red? A new "thing" comes along and several thousand people go "I CAN DO DAT!!!" and after three months we find most of the "clubs" etc have all closed down and there remains a central core of those who actually embraced the whole "thing" and made it theirs and went out and learned what it was all about etc? Maybe............shrugs.

"frilly knicker brigade" .lol - love you brits!
yeah .....even here in canada ,it seems that when some folks start
they seem to think 'retro/ burlesque ' is about corsets, boas and so called pinup up looks when technically if one is talking about the 40's 50's
it would be foundation garments ,pointy bras and girdles and flowy night gowns
corsets are completely another era.
moreover of course burlesque can encompass modern clothes of today as we are females of the 21st century.

this is why even though i would love to get up on stage it's extremely unlikely i ever will because, i don't think i am anywhere near creative or talented enough to come up with an interesting routine. i wouldn't feel happy with myself if i just went up and stripped off even if it was in a non-stripperish kind of way, i would feel i was damaging burlesques good name lol! i am going to try and go to a few classes to see how i get on because, maybe that will encourage me to be more creative and explore ideas. i am with dolly royale though i still like frilly knickers
they just shouldn't be the focus of an act!

haha -dont get me or for that matter any one else in the b-q scene who does something that is not part of the 'glamour-pretty 'type wrong. I do happen to think it can be a sort of very cute 1890's sort of look.
"frilly knickers ' (still makes me giggle) ;-) the problem is there is too much of a tendancy of folks to see say one b-q show and suddenly think that is burlesque and that is the way to be costumed.when the reality is if one were to see some of the old legends perform like here in north america. you would see they dont even dress that way .in fact they use a lot of capes in their acts and a sort of stylized 'striptease bellydance outfit' or the flowy nightgown type outfit

I disagree with you here.
You are right that if people are talking about 40s/50s then they would be better off thinking about girdles, bullet bras etc.
However, burlesque didn't originate in the 40s, and the corset is a staple item for many a burlesque performer.
Burlesque and the 1940s/50s are not part of the same thing, even if they do go together very nicely.
Also, pin up looks are very much of the 1940s and 50s. Much of Gil Elvgren's work was produced during these decades.
Totally agree with you on the point about burlesque incorporating modern clothes though

I'm looking forward to seeing some theatrically inspired, interesting and skilled acts - I am rather excited about being entertained!
