    Default TV Talent Shows

    Hey,

Does anyone have an opinion about TV talent shows?

Are the good for exposure, downright humiliating and can the make or break an artist?

I am deliberating auditioning for Australia's Got Talent as they're searching for the ultimate entertainer, you see?

hmmm - well they are good for publicity, but you can't control how they will make you look (and they have some nasty tricks up their sleeve), also double check the terms of the prize - you might end up contracted to them for a period and be contacted to do things you'd rather not.

I decided not to go on Britains Got Talent last year - but ive changed my opinions and might indeed go for it in 2009.

Although my 12yr old daughter is insisting it would be far too embarrassing for her...

I think the pop shows, where you have to sing some silly pop ballad are not great.

But when it's a chance to showcase your own, well-rehearsed acts, I think it could be good thing.

Of course, they do try to make any money from success you have off the back of the show.

As a mum of an 11 year girl I just know that's making you think 'all the more reason to do it!'

Hey what's the point of being a parent of kids who think they're mature teenagers way before their time if we can't be embarrassing parents! I practice my 'dad dancing' especially so I can embarrass my two at family parties

(and I bet she'd secretly be massively impressed of her Dad, though would never admit it)

I think it depends whether can actually get on screen, because then you can market ourself in future as 'as seen on Australia's Got Talent'. The people who like your bellydancing/burlesque would also notice you on it because it's slightly out of the norm and you could build on this again for marketing. And you'll attract people who had never heard of you before.

Provided you go into it with a very thick skin knowing they will try to rip you apart or edit you oddly to make 'good telly' and with the aim to get some publicity and if you move on in the competition this is then an added bonus......then I'd go for it.....life's too short.....and you might inspire others watching.

And if you can handle the criticism well, with good grace.....you'll win over more support from the audience and make you look good and judges look biased - Michelle L'Amour on America's Got Talent did brilliantly finding a whole new audience that didn't know her or burlesque before, looking witty and smart......and damn sexy.

I have to agree with Tempest, and as they say, when you're lying in your bed 50 years from now, no one every worries about the things they've done, only about the things they didn't.

So you go out there, give it your best shot, and you never know what might happen!

They are only humiliating if you have no talent whatsoever but are delusioned that you do. I've never seen you perform but I think I can safely say that is not the case for you.

So as everyone else has said, it would be great exposure providing you are aware of the risks of editing.

Good luck if you decide to go for it!

I really don't want to put a damper on this thread as its great to see so much positivity out there!

I studied film and television at university and a large component of my course was on non-fiction television programming, including the talent show format. As people have already pointed out, you will have absolutely no control over how you are portrayed in the final edit, and you will most likely be shoehorned into a predetermined role or type that the producers feel they need to fill.

The idea that if you are truly talented then this will some how come through is also a bit of a falsity set up by the structure of these programmes. Talents shows and any type of reality based programing often boil down to discourses about personality and personal stories that make for good television. If you happen to be the person that they want to knock down then they will do so irrespective of how talented or nice you really are.

The other thing to bear in mind is the huge burden of representation that will be on you to represent all of 'burlesque' or whatever you niche talent is to a massive audience that will likely have little experience of it.

also remember that you will have to live with it forever; the things you say, how you look, your subtle inferences or how you are presented will be around for a long time in some format on the web, and also remember to consider the effect it will have on all other areas of your life; your family, friends colleagues, potential colleagues etc. When you are filming it is all very self contained and insular, but you will have to go out into the world again and live with peoples' responses to what they have seen and perceived of you.

Also think about how it will affect you professionally; there will be some out there who feel that any success you achieve will be undeserved as it is off the back of television exposure rather than hard work. This is quite the wrong attitude, but it is one that is frequently demonstrated. Hopefully these people will be few and far between, and you will be judged on your merits rather than peoples' perceptions of television talent shows as a low medium...but I expect that you will receive this reaction from some, so it may be best to be prepared for it.

I really don't mean to persuade you, or anyone else, one way or the other as to whether or not they are a good idea. Just make sure you are really well informed before you make any decisions, perhaps take out some books on reality television or find some people who have first hand experience of being involved.

    Best wishes!
    xxxVxxx
