2008 - How was it for you?
Following on from the thread by Emerald Ace, how was 2008 generally for you?
Have to say mine has been good on the whole after a few years of struggling with depression and some bad times etc...
At the beginning of this year I finally got on stage after spending the whole of 2007 wondering and worrying about it... now i've performed all over the north of england.
I have to say that Burlesque has given me so much more confidence and the impact on the rest of my life has been really positive, eg new & better job, new house etc...
All that and the support of a wonderful boyfriend has made life good and I now focus on all the positive things in my life and can't wait to perform some more in 09!!!
Hope everyone ends 2008 on a high & all the best for 2009 !!!

This year has been a pretty bloody amazing one for me. The Silk Stocking Striptease Show went from a dead in the water charity fundraising event and a project poo-pooh'ed by some of the long term professional MoB members to a fully fledged burlesque show with a solid backbone of staff and an excellent reputation.
In 2008 we figured we would run a couple of shows at most - we ran 5 full shows, collaberated on 2 album launches and a demonstration for a Fetish Market. We went from a MySpace page to a proper wensite (something I didn't expect). We moved from a Sunday night that was threatening to kill us to a Saturday night which made us. I haven't been rolling in money (I've been paid once for my part in all the shows) , but my plan of banking some cash to put towards future shows has paid off and is now working and I've had a blast even if I no longer have a clear view of the stage because I have 100 people in front of me.
If you've taken part in any Silk Stocking Striptease Show, even if it's just in the audience, then I have to thank you. I'd also like to thank all the other promoters who have come to the show - I have no time for feuding with other promoters, I'd rather get on with what I'm doing and I've had virtually no problems with any other promoter, pretty good when I look at the scene as a whole.
I've also been lucky enough to build good relationships with many people this year. I've also learnt about having a thick skin when it comes to the scene. I'm aware that some sections of the scene are against me for various reasons, but I learned from Rufus who said that people shouldn't be bothered by their haters and detractors because we won't ever woirk with them anyway. Politics in burlesque will always be around, but I'm not going to let it get me down.
On a fan front I've also had a great time - I've watched some talented performers and I've even been able to watch my wife perform rather than be a stage manager for her or at home without her.
For me the best shows of 2008 have been the last Candy Box, the Big Burlesque Bout, the first Dr. Sketchy's Birmingham, the December Scarlet Fever Presents and every Silk Stocking Striptease Show (I may be biaised on the last one
).
Finally watching my wife, Angel LaVey, develop as a performer has been an absolute pleasure, thank you to all those who appreciate what she does. If her next few ideas come to fruition then you can all expect more lunatic burlesque in 2009. I can't say anymore than that though or else!...:censored::blackeye:
Rock and roll.

I can't say it's been great. The operation and all the related health issues haven't been a picnic. Moving to our new house was more of a hindrance than a help. Quitting my safe full-time job was scary and daunting. I'm hoping that 2009 will be happier and more settled, if I'm honest ...

to be completely honest... this has been one of the most difficult years for me on just about every level...
it has been heartbreaking and crushing and frustrating. i've felt just how my little python looks just before he sheds his skin - blind, vulnerable, uncomfortable and just a little afraid. but changing skins is a natural cycle and i think that 2009 will be AWESOME! and i'll be a brighter, stronger and happier person as i take it on.
i've learned alot of lessons and passed alot of trials. now it's time for adventures!

Up and down to be honest - I've been jobless for nearly a full year now which has been a real downer
Also the last month has been pretty much solid nasty illness which I really could have done without! Oh and speaking of illnesses my little nephew (see high-points later!) needs a heart op which has already been cancelled twice - grrrr!
However it has had some distinctly high points - I've got a fabulous new nephew and pseudo-nephew and towards the end of the year I met a lovely young lady too

I was made redundant twice! Which sucked! One company tried to turn me over, and my friend was given 6 months to live. However this year cemented my relationship with Geoff and that has made me incredibly happy. I intend to use all my experiences from 2008 to make 2009 a positive and productive year!

I'm going to do a list... i love lists and it should curb my tendancy to ramble!
2008: The Best Bits
- I got a new day job
- My OH went back to college and is really happy
- Great fun perfoming
- My Octopus
- I got this really great lamp made out of shells and a big sea anemone
- The best photoshoot of my life w/Candee Photography
- Spent loads of time with some good friends
2008: The worst bits
- Burlesque related politics really got me down this year, but my friends (both in the scene and in the real world) supported me and made me feel that i was not alone
- I still live in a really skanky flat
- I have been flat broke all year
- My cat is still the worst behaved little ball of cute in the world
- I feel like I have not stretched myself as much as I should
- I have put on weight... like almost a stone in a year
- I guess the main problem in 2008 was not getting motivated and doing things until so late in the year
