Help with my Dissertation!!!
Hi I was anyone help: I am doing my final dissertation for university on Burlesque - my title - 'Burlesque as an Art Form: How does a Burlesque Performer differ from a Stripper?'
If you would be able to answer these questions that would be great!
How do you think you differ from a stripper?
Do you agree that Burlesque is an art form?
Have you any acts or performances I could use in my essay to describe burlesque?
Thankyou!
Naida xxx

Hi. If you look in the "Got A Frequently Asked Question........................FAQ You" box, you will get a lot of your questions answered, similarly, a wee troll throguh some of the threads will bring up oodles of posts about whnetr Burlesque is "just" stripping etc and so forth

I am a male to female Cross dresser. I personally have no troubles taking my kit of as Michelle Moi Belle or plain old Michelle but, as I do not strip down to the buff and wobble my bits at folk I am NOT a "stripper". As I do magic and incorporate the magic into my Burlesque routine I am working on and, as I am doing Bulrsque which is a "PARODY" of a branch of the entertainment business or politics etc and I will be parodying a rather famous magicians wife on stage, my routine will still not fall into "Stripper" but lean very heavily into what the name/term BURLESQUE actually means.
Is Burlesque and art form? Yes, very much so. The amount of trouble the girls and boys go to to get their costumes perfect, the dance steps/movements perfect, the music perfect, facial expressions perfect, it is NOT just drag a few bits of clothes of and waggle onestits or willy
. It is indeed an art form.
Describing Burlesque? I will point you again to the FAQS section for a great writup by one of the greatest Burlesquers on the planet.
But, in the short term. Burlesque in its purest form is PARODY of an particular event, stage show, politician, singer, dancer. In the early days Burlesque Parodied the top Operatic Singers of the day.
I hope this helps you, please PM me if you need to know more

What do you mean by stripper? I'm assuming something similar to 'lap dancer'. Very simpy, it's a matter of intent. A stripper intends to arouse the audience sexually. I inted to make them laugh, or induce an emotion (other than sexual arousal), and to entertain
No. It's a form of entertainment. It's primary purpose is to entertain. Many people will try to introduce art into their acts, but in the end, all that matters is entertainment value
How do you want to use them?

Hello Naida! I know you!
Dita Von Teese often says she doesn't mind being called a stripper (there's definitely a page in her book where she talks about it)... which doesn't seem to be a particularly popular view. I can see why she doesn't mind, but I can also see why people would object to it a bit.

I am quite happy to call myself a stripper. i think some people are uncomfortable because of the modern day connotations of lap dancers etc. Burlesque is whole worlds away from that kinda thing. Not that im putting down lap dancers/ pole dancers etc either what they do is also an art. burlesque is more about satire and irony (well it is for me anyway).
most things can be classed as an artform as long as it takes some talent
i have many acts. traditional stuff ranging from cheesecake powder puffs to fans to just simple clean strips. then i also do gorelesque and some kinda quirky stuff
PM me if you want any more info

Define your terms!
Many many moons ago when I was at uni that was the mantra. Also thinking about different generations etc. have you considered what the term stripper, exotic dancer, might mean to people of different ages and social status?
