Does anyone else hate writing copy?
I'm in the process of re-branding (new videos, new website, new everything really) and as you'd expect, I'm writing a new blurb & bio.
I've always hated writing blurbs because writing about oneself objectively (albeit with business in mind) is incredibly difficult. I always instinctively go to write:
Beatrix is X, but also Y and Z, making her unique.Urgh. What trite!
So I've been doing my best to write something that is, in itself, unique and interesting. It's bloody difficult! I've been coming up with all these strange amalgamations of adjectives and nouns and I'm not sure if they're my own neo-logisms or whether I've heard them somewhere before... "Web pilot" is one of them!
I'd offer advice here for anyone struggling with writing their own copy, but I really don't think I have any. For me, it's an up-hill battle.WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

I hear ya!
Writing copy is my least favorite thing to do and I've got a lot of it to do!
Luckily, the lovely Lucille is good at bullsh*tting and I'm good at editing so we just about get by!
If I think of a great BvB statement; I'll pm it!

Yes, Lucille is wonderfully talented at copy writing. I've already chatted to her about my new copy.
Thanks so much for offering to send me a BvB statement. It all helps.
Today I decided to seize the day and just write. Write anything. As long as there's something on paper, ney, on SCREEN, then there's something to work with.
Now I have to write my bio.
Born to a loving mother and father bear, Beatrix was raised in a small cottage in the middle of Grimms forest. Aged 5 her life was turned upside down when a blonde-haired vixen, by the name of Ellen Goldilocks, ate her breakfast...

is it absolutely essential to write in the third person? that always seems so weird and false!

I think it does need to be in the third person for these things... if you write "i am this, i do that" it ends up sounding like something you wrote at school. Just write as though you are somebody else, or ask other people for a comment on you, and then use a bunch of those!

Try not to think of it as a chore, you are already on the right trail, list everything that you want promoters, and fans alike, to know.
When you have written everything down, go back and assess the order of importance of each point.
To flesh out into a paragraph or two, you might need to be inventive. Look at the opening paragraph of any topical newspaper story. See how the journalist and the editor, paint a picture, even before the story begins. There's no sin in doing the same, it's not plagiarising.
Now the trick about highlighting your talents is not so difficult. Think of a performer that you admire, watch a performance on YouTube, write a critique about her. Now all you have to do is transpose her name for yours, that and tweak your copy to fit.
Do watch your grammar, an interesting article will rarely contain cliches or a split infinitive. A what? One of these: Split infinitive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When you have finished, check and recheck your spelling, and if you are using a spell checker, it's almost certain that it will be set to american/english. So do yourself a favor, spell it 'favour.' You'll be writing a thesis next.

I hate it. It always feels contrived and cheesy. True, sometimes I go for the cheese angle to make it stick in the mind, but it's so difficult to do well and I'm not sure I manage it. Plus it always feels a bit egotistical to try to 'big yourself up' and sell yourself.
Maybe we should all just write each other's from now on!

I hate it too! I can never think of anything that doesn't make me sound completely up myself. x
