Too old & fat for Burlesque??
Hi guys, I'n new here, so please be gentle.
I'm 40 now and after losing a lot of weight have gained a bit and settled at a size 12-14. I have always loved the burlesque world but people keep telling me that I'm too old and too big to be thinking about wearing the clothes and doing my make-up like I want to.
Are they right, really? Am I too old to wear these clothes and dress up nice?
It can be very upsetting..............................
please advise meWARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

You are very welcome to this forum.
Have a good look around, then go into search, you will find many members who join with same tentative misgivings that you have, read the threads, it will make you feel good. If you follow your dream, stick with it, you will become as big a favourite as many others. Age is but a date on the calendar. When you turned forty, did you feel forty? Of course not, because you were just one day older, that's all.
As for size, anyone can be glamourous, one of my favourite larger ladies, was the late Hattie Jacques, she was awesome.
If you want some inspiration, look at these two links.

40 is no age and 12-14 is not fat!! Look how you want & wear what you want with confidence and love it!
People who try to put others off doing things are usually jealous because they don't have the balls to do it themselves!

Hi and welcome!
I know exactly how you feel, as I'm 37 and a generous size 16! I joined the forum a short while ago and I have no misgivings now about doing my burlesque for beginners class on Saturday!
My advice is to live your life to the full and go with what your heart tells you.....and ignore the negative people around you!!! Jealousy is a terrible thing and they are to be pitied!!!

The wonderful thing about burlesque is that it really, really doesn't matter what you look like. It really doesn't. You wouldn't believe the amount of girls I come across who say to me "I wish I could do burlesque, but I'm too fat/old//shy..." It frustrates me a bit because there's no such thing as too fat, old, or too shy! The only thing stopping them is themselves. You'll find that the burlesque community is so open minded and supportive of everyone, and I really hope that you find it in ya to wear what you want and be who you want.
Yeeeah, girl power!! woop woop!

I can't wait untill I am forty. Personally I love watching more mature ladies on stage,
Their is something about thier sex appeal and presence which can only be learned from experiance.
I am a size 18-20,makes size 12-14 sound tiny doesn't it.

Hi there,
I have hardly posted on this forum, which I am planning to change, but I just had to say something about Rosslyn's post. Although I am running the Hourglass, preaching size toleranz, trying to show all kinds of women how glamorous they are, I had (sometimes still have) huge doubts about myself. I am 36 and a generous size 16 and I performed burlesque for the first time last year at Vivid Soda.
I was utterly mortified to go on stage. I thought everybody would just think or say 'What's fatty doing there?'
But I did it anyway, because I really wanted to. The reactions were amazing and it gave me a real boost.
What I mean to say is. The only one ever stopping you from doing anything is yourself. People who think bad about you are normally just jealous. Burlesque doesn't know about age or size and that's a huge part of why we all love it so much.
Do it! You will be amazed how good you feel afterwards.
Oh and btw. size 12-14 is certainly not fat!

You are not too old and certainly not too fat - there is no such thing.

I'm nearly 40 and still dress in old school metal gear, and I'm probably bigger than you - if you want to dress a certain way and be a certain way then the choice is all yours and no-one elses.
