'There's Snow Business Like Show Business' Review
Considering how the night started, Belle Diablo forced to pull out at the last minute, the weather delayed the other talent, my bus to the venue got a rock thrown through the window whilst traveling at 30mph and my wife badly bruised her knee after slipping on black ice, you’d be forgiven if you thought the night was going to be a disaster; and you’d also be totally wrong.
With Belle Diablo no longer on the bill it came down to the rest of the talent and the stage manager to shoulder the burden, this also mean that I was roped in to replace the stge manager. So from the wings hobbled Angel LaVey whilst yours truly got to replace her as the skivvy, and what fun I had.
I’m very glad that I arrived early. I got a chance to hear Liberty Pink and The Midnight Cabaret Band rehearsing. I feel that Liberty is an excellent singer; the perfect choice for The Cherry Pop Peep Show in-house singer. In my opinion she will help to bring a strong vocal identity to the event.
The event kicked off with Liberty and her band busting out three upbeat tunes, and then the star of the night in my opinion, Des O’Connor, took to the stage and promptly ripped me a new one for failing to set up his ukulele mike properly. This compere is a marvelous amalgamation of singer, comic and musician. I got to listen to some humorous songs about cheap white wine (ah my misspent youth) and necrophilia when I wasn’t busy getting the other performers sorted out.
My wife, Angel LaVey, fresh from sticking a load of ice on her rapidly swelling knee, performed two acts for the night. Her first was a performance of all that is wrong with programs like The X-Factor and her second was a transformation piece. Because Angel is my wife I refuse to review her, I feel that I am biased towards her whilst also her harshest critic; it’s fun in my head.
Ophelia Bitz entertained the audience and myself with two dangerous acts. First she did a fire act which benefitted greatly from her unique way of mixing the fuel, in fact Miss Bitz could shake cocktails at a bar like that and make a fortune (she uses her amazing cleavage for those of you too slow to catch on). Her second act was a stage managers nightmare but went over very well with the audience. How about a beautiful young woman walking over broken glass for an act? Oh don’t worry about the walking, she also grinds her feet into the glass... and then she jumps on it... she’s mad. My wife raved about Ophelia from when she first saw her perform in London, she was spot on, this is one talented and entertaining lady.
I feel that the performer who benefited the most from working The Cherry Pop Peep Show with influential performers such as Des, Liberty and Ophelia was Chris Cross; I hope that word of mouth will get this young man plenty more bookings for the future. This cheeky Geordie, stereo typically propping up the bar between acts, had the audience and I cringing with his body contortions and laughing at his on stage patter. In the second half Chris performed an escapology stunt from a straight jacket, complete with a count down to break his previous record, and he would have beaten it had he not developed an unfortunate itch in an area nobody should ever scratch in public, let alone on a stage.
The Christmas show was an amalgamation of Burlesque, Freak Show, Cabaret, Comedy and Circus. In my opinion this mixture of performances gelled to create another quality night of entertainment. My only regret was that I missed parts of acts because I was busy working, but the pay off for me was that I got to talk to the performers backstage, and what a friendly bunch they where, despite my hassling them.
The audience was an improvement on the first show. Because this show was not placed next to The Candy box it was attended by a lot more Burlesque fans, and the feedback from those my wife had time to talk to was that they would be back and would be spreading the word to their other Burly loving buddies; this can only be a good thing. Personally I’ve already heard who some of the March 1st talent are and I’m excited already.WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread
