Burlesque outside the Anglo-Saxon world
There's plenty of resources for burlesque in the UK, US, Australia, a bit about New Zealand maybe Canada (actually come to think of it I haven't seen Canadian burlesque...)...
but what about those from outside those countries?
I just read Burlesque Mag and they had an article about burlesque in Shanghai - but that was more about a couple of people from the UK (?) opening a burlesque club that occasionally had Chinese-based acts. I've read about performers from Scandinavia and Japan, and one that was half-Indonesian, but not much else.
I do know that in South East Asia there's a Chinese tradition of the Hungry Ghosts Festival (where ghosts are said to come back to Earth for a night or two and you're meant to burn offerings as gifts for them to use in the afterlife). One way to appease the ghosts is to hold a public live performance, or "Koh-Tai"/"Merry Making", which was essentially a big burlesque show! There was singing, dancing, skimpy outfits, opera, costumes, all sorts of stuff. The ghosts had front row reserved
Here's some pictures.
Other than that though, what else is there? How do different countries and cultures interpret burlesque - similar in style to US/UK or completely different but still being "suggestive parody"?WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

Off topic but, i got so confused at the hungry ghosts festival when i was in Singapore! (my dad used to live there) considering it was so clean, i wondered why they let food out and gold bars, all was eventually solved and ive now stocked up on hell money
Again off topic but are you from Jahor Baru? (spelling?) i went for the day, got a loads of lovely things, got stuck at customs for hours then walked back to Singapore (That confuses a lot of people)
Sorry, back on track now

YES! I was gonna ask "How did you guess" but then I realised I put "Johor" as one of my locations. ;P Yeah, I was born & raised in JB, my family now lives on the fringes of JB while I'm basing myself in Australia.Again off topic but are you from Jahor Baru? I'd be confused over walking to Singapore myself, only because it's TOO HOT XD

Its odd how these things work out, my dad used to live in Yishun near Sembawang so its was alot cooler than the south, which was odd considering the islands only 3 foot square. I'd love to go back to JB and Malaysia one day and do some proper traveling but my dads now based in India, well in the Indian Ocean, which is why i cant go
