I need help with my balloon act!
Hi, im looking to put together an act incorporating the ol' balloon trick, and i'm probably being really thick here but any suggestions on how to affix the balloons to my body? I was thinking body tape but surely that would leave the balloon attached to you, which would look terrible!
Any suggestions?
Fay

From my very lightweight knowledge of this, I think some performers attach the balloons to ribbon tied round thier bodies, which can be untied and dropped once all the balloons have been popped.

At least I think that's what they do.... :question:Iolair Images - Come along and have a look..... You know you want to!

Indeed, safety pinning the balloons to your costume is often the best way to go to make sure the balloons stay on - they are tempremental beasts sometimes!
If you aren't wearing much costume, or can't/don't want to use safety pins, I have heard of performers threading all the balloons onto a strand of thik, but transparent, fishing wire/line and tying that around themselves. I have never tryed this myself, but I'm sure someone her must have.

I advise strongly *against* using a thread of non-elastic material to thread balloons onto and wrap around yourself. It's nigh-on impossible to get the thread to sit tight against your body. So whilst the (loose) thread may hold the balloons up before you go on stage, you may well find that as you (and the balloons) move, the thread moves too, bringing the balloons with it! I've seen many balloon acts (including my own) end embarrassingly prematurely because the balloons have fallen down.
My secret tip?
I've been keeping this one extremely closely guarded for a long time, but have since resolved to share all of my knowledge (even the stuff that may disadvantage me with regard to competition)...
- Take 2 pieces of elastic - one that wraps around your bust area, sitting snuggly and tightly, the other around your waist/hips.
- Attach hooks to one end of each of the elastics, and eyes to the opposite ends.
- Inflate your balloons, and cut holes in the "stub" of latex poking out from under the knot.
- Thread the balloons onto the pieces of elastic, using the holes you've cut in the "stubs".
- Attatch the balloons by wrapping the elastic around your body and closing it with the hook and eye.
It's foolproof!
- The elastic clings to your body (stopping balloons falling down)
- It's easy enough to do it single handed (incase you're the only burlesque performer on a bill)
- And the best bit is that when the balloon popping's finished, you can unclip the elastic and remove the strings of balloon carcass before carrying on with the rest of the act.
There, that's my biggest burlesque secret out of the bag.
I call it: The Bourbon Method.
