Tassels!
Just wanted to pick your brains... I am putting together a costume for a routine I am working on and I need to get hold of some tassles.
First off I am looking for somewhere either in Bristol area or online that sells pastie tassels - so far the smallest ones I have been able to find are very obviously for cushions...
Secondly I need some of the long tassels hanging from strips that go on knickers, etc. I have no idea if there is a proper name for these and thus maybe that is why I have not be very successful in online searches. Again, does anyone know where to buy them?
Any help would be great.WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

Hi hun. Maybe try ebay - that's where I get a lot of crafting bits. I think the long tassels on strips are often listed as 'fringing' or 'trimming' but you might have to try a few different ways or maybe just browse the craft or upholstery tabs.

Hi hun, I make pasties and tassels - and I also make the 'shimmy' pants with the fringing. If you have a look at my photo albums on my myspace, all examples are on there - but I can make anything you desire! www.myspace.com/misssuziesequin

Got to agree with Emerald, I've always got stuff from ebay using keywords like 'fringing' and 'trimming'...and if you try looking for 'dancewear' or 'skating'
But I've noticed that not as many sellers are around as there used to be, so checkout online dancewear shops like Streamers: Streamers - Dancewear, Fabrics, Rhinestones, Sequins, Feathers, Patterns, Dance Stones, BraidThe Russian Doll Lass - like Shrek's onion, but with sequins...

Not sure what you are after : fabric fringing/tassels or beaded. Fabric is cheaper, but can unravel and is not as heavy ( or shiney).
Best wholesalers ( also do cash sales) are Barnett Lawson on Little Portland Street, London W1 - down in a basement, but open to individual callers. They stock a good range of both.
Beaded fringing: There's a company called Ells and Farrier, also trading under the name 'Creative Beadcraft', in Brewer Street, Soho, who will make beaded fringing for you in a variety of lengths as well as a good range of colours. I've just googled them quickly to check the name; they used to do mail-order, and I'm sure by now will have an on-line service.
Be warned : it is expensive, but worth having made professionally, as they will make it in a series of specific lengths for you if you want to decorate something like shimmy knickers. It is usually set onto a matching narrow ribbon. If you order one continuous length and then cut it:
1. You lose a bit either end because of tucking the raw edges of the ribbon under so they don't fray.
2. If you cut your own lengths off one longer piece you end up cutting through the thread that the beads are threaded onto ( if you see what I mean), which means that there is no knot to stop the beads falling off the loose end and unravelling.
By ordering specific lengths you get a bit of extra ribbon either end, and the whole thing is knotted off securely. I'm almost certain they will make matching beaded tassels.
Also try Daphne Randall, in Hayes, Middlesex. I've just made some cheer-leader costumes for 'Legally Blonde', and she tambour-beaded all the panels.
I'll give you her contact details if you PM me.

P.S.
Emerald is right - it's fringing you want for the knickers.
And Barnett Lawson do not have an online shop but have a reasonable range on their website Welcome to Barnett Lawson, and will send you pictures of other stuff and are very helpful on the telephone if you explain what you are after; they don't make to order unless you need 100's of metres, but will accept orders over the phone.

Thanks so much everyone for all the advice!
I will have a look and see if I can get some ready made, but to be honest I think I would prefer to make my own because then I can get just the write pair of knickers as well - don't want to be uncomfy when doing the routine, lol. So, thanks for coming back to me with both options, it's giving me loads to follow up and hopefully I will find exactly what I am looking for!
xx
