    Default Glasgow Retro friendly Hairdresser?

    Hi lovely people...

I am looking for the wonderful retro blonde streak in the hair, and was wondering if anyone knows of a retro friendly hairdresser in the Glasgow area I could go to...I don't trust myself to try it as I'd end up with orange hair or something...

Haven't the foggiest where to go to get it done, so any suggestions would be oh so gratefully received...

    Thanks

    Kari

Hello from one Kari to another! I have been wondering about retro hair specialists myself so I will be watching this thread with interest. I always wonder where people I admire in the burlesque scene get their hair done and should probably just ask one day!

My hairdresser is very good and very well priced but I wouldn't call it "retro" really, I am just happy with the service I get! It is the Rainbow Room Academy in Howard Street just off St Enoch Square. Because it is a training academy you get your hair done by a student, hence why it is only about £14-16 for a cut and blow dry, however the quality is still good as the director usually comes round to give them a hand and neaten your hair up and give input. You'll get a lovely shiatsu head massage while your shampoo is applied and you always get tea or coffee and the most lovely biscuits.

As for your dye question, I was thinking about going totally bleach blonde and was quoted £50 for a full head, so it'll be much less than that I expect! They insist on doing a test patch on you 48 hours before you get your dye job done. Worth asking in there about your blonde streak, and maybe take a photo in with you too in case there is any doubt.

    Hi Kari,
My hairdresser is in Kirkintilloch and although she is not a retro hair dresser she has done retro hair for me (for nights out and they are taught how to finger wave, pin curl as students and they like doing it because it is different). Colour wise I think she is pretty good I (my current colour is blonde/brown in a bob cut and folks do ask who does my hair. She also gave me a good gel for finger waves and I have had hair extensions (both bonded and clip in) and a range of different hair colours. So I would defo trust her with colour although I would take a photo just to ensure she knows exactly what you want. The shop is harly jo hair in Kirkintilloch tel no 0141 588 5861 and if you want to go ahead I would ask for Shirley (the owner) to have an appointment with.
    Hope this helps.

If you get brave it's honestly not too difficult to do it yourself, especially if a friend helps. I used to do my own, before I went blonde all over.

Some not very good example pics in this post

It's just a case of being very careful to seperate the hair and using the right dye. The best one I have found so far is Live Colour XXL Absolute Platinum. This will go anywhere from white blonde through to dirty blonde depending on your natural colour. But should lighten with each application (and you'd need to dye the roots every 3 - 5 weeks depending on the speed your hair grows).

The only warning I would give is that if your hair is red it may go slightly gingery on the ends on the first application.

I would totally recommend doing it yourself or at least up-keeping the roots yourself if you do get it done somewhere professionally, purely because of the cost, as the roots will come through shockingly/noticeably fast on blonde hair. And a panel with roots looks a little eep! (I know from personal experience, lol). If you get it done professionally make sure you find out what colour they use or get them to recommend a suitably matching colour you can buy at Boots or wherever so that you can do the roots.

As for a retro hairdresser - in my experience most good salons (i.e. not somewhere like Supercuts) should be able to do exactly what you want, though the "trendier" ones might have better colour options... the local village hairdresser that all the blue rinsers go to probably won't have much call for white blonde tones, but possibly something warmer...

    Good luck! And post pics!!

i know this probably isn't much use as i live in Ayrshire but, my hairdresser is amazing at retro/vintage hairstyles (although he does live in Glasgow) he can do victory rolls and pin curls and all sorts of fancy do's

i don't think you would necessarily have to go to a hairdresser that can do vintage to get the style you want, just a good hairdresser that will listen to what you want! i've heard that the rainbow rooms is really good so the academy will prob be good too. if it wasn't for the fact i love my current hairdresser i'd prob go myself as i'm paying about 80 squid a pop to get my cut and colour, even with train fare it would still be cheaper.

I shall give the rainbow rooms a go I think - I go there already anyway, just wasn't sure if they'd understand my needs as a retro-girly :-)

I will most definitely post pics; just hope it looks ok as my front section of hair is quite short at the moment - been trying the blunt fringe look but my cow's lick really isn't playing the game...lol
