Makeup for Performances/Shoots xx
I was just wondering really what sort of makeup performers use for performances and shoots - how does it differ from your daily makeup? Do you use the same brands as you would in a daytime situation or does it call for something a little more heavy-duty?
Does anyone have any tips?
I know when I've done photoshoots (very few of them) I've absolutely piled the slap on, even to get it to show up.

I use a lot of MAC products, as they're well pigmented, and their pro full coverage foundation for shows.
I always put a base on under eyeshadow so it doesn't crease when I'm hot under the lights (either urban decay primer potion, or a MAC paint pot)

I've been thinking of investing in some MAC - day-to-day I wear stuff like Urban Decay, Too Faced, sometimes a bit of Lime Crime.
Do any of you come from professional makeup backgrounds? I'd like to take a course, but I'm struggling to find things that aren't full time or hair and makeup.
I pretty much live off youtube makeup tutorials to get tips and improve my techniques - I really love Kandee Johnson, she has some great costume tutorials and she uses a great range of products from high-end to stuff that's pretty affordable.

I don't tend to use higher end brands as I've found high street products that work for me. Day to day I don't wear much make up anyway - or indeed any unless I'm going out in the evening. When I do that I tend to wear the same products as I do for stage/shoots, just in smaller amounts. I don't see the point in having two separate kits. I do tend to experiment more off stage though, so I wear more colours of eyeshadow and eyeliner, and I do different eyeliner styles as well. Other than that, the biggest difference is that I draw my eyebrows much heavier and more precisely for stage/shoots than for everyday.
My one piece of advice is: stay away from mineral foundation for photoshoots, and for stage as well in many cases. There's usually mica particles in it, and these reflect light like nothing else. You can end up with pictures showing your face as a different shade to your neck, purely because it's more reflective than the rest of your body ...

I love mac... urban decay etc.. but actually 1 of my best buys was a large eyeshadow pallet from ebay... it was super cheap n the colours r totali amazing.. n with a lil clear mascara i use em as crazy colour eye liners as well... i think there r something like 80+ eyeshadows n it cost me the princely sum of about £15 in total!!! Works great 4 days and shoots.. im wearing it in my avi pic!!

Performance makeup you want something heavy duty that isn't going to sweat off. It's a case of cake it on. But photoshoots, cameras can be most unforgiving and this is when you need to apply your makeup very precisely. It's worth learning how to contour and highlight properly for shoots. Also, avoid overly bright eye colours unless you're doing a more avant-garde look. It tends to look 'too much' on camera.

I have no experience of stage/photo shoots, but would agree entirely about minerals make up - I use Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals for daytime work make up and on the odd occasion where I have worn it out in the evenings, I look like I have powdered my face in talcum powder on photos.
For evening wear I use Clarins extra firming foundation - I find it really smooth to apply and gives pretty good coverage.
In fact - I'm wearing Clarins in my profile picture up there ^^, MAC eyeliner pencil, Clarins mascara, Revlon lipstick, Clarins eyeshadow (even though you can't see it in the photo) ...
Never used them, but I understand that Smashbox products are goodLast edited by CountessB; 02-04-2010 at 08:16 PM. Reason: added a bit

I've tried out a few different foundations - I work in catering (blegh) so having something long lasting that doesn't melt off under heat lamps and in the kitchen is really important. I've just gone from using a Clinique foundation to using a Loreal True Colour which is really good, half the price, and matches my super-pale skin perfectly.
That's quite interesting about bright colours - I love them, but I don't really think that they're for me... I think they wash out my icy-blue eyes a bit much and make me look a bit doll-like... in a bad way. I tend to go for golds, bronzes, browns and neutral colours with some swishy black eyeliner (which I'm running out of - eek!)
Contouring's definitely something I want to look into, I think I need to find some palettes with a good range of colours to play with. xx

We use MAC products in the studio - and so does the make up artist we use.
In addition, Leichner is very good if you tend to get hot quickly under lights.Deb
