Short burlesque hairdo
Hello lovely peeps!
I have just had my hair cut into a layered bob and had a fringe cut in (it has been over 20 years since I last had a fringe). See my little photo...
The thing is, I am wondering what I can do with it to make it look more "burlesque" or "1940s"...
Any advice or inspiration would be most welcome!
Thanks,
Love, Merri xWARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

you can always roll your fringe into a victory or a shell roll and it stilllooks long enough to get some curls through it...failing that hair accessories like flowers etc pinning back one side, or do what ive just done and order some wigs from the lovely annabelles wigs to play with. xxxx

You could go for finger waves for a nice 1920's feel.

Pincurls look neat either rolled on the spot or flat on the scalp. If you cant finger wave then a triple barrel curling iron will give the same effect.

It would look lovely in a Louise Brookes bob!

Well actually all hair-dos are fair game. Burlesque isn't limited to any era. E.g. if you are a classical burlesque enthusiast then the elaborate locks of Ancient Greece would be suited; if you are interested in promoting British burlesque then any hairdo from the middle ages through to the 1930s would suffice... Obviously Victorian styles feature heavily since it was the Victorians who popularised burlesque as a mainstream entertainment form, in the first place. Interestingly most of these 19th Century burlesque queens often wore wigs and caps to dress their hair like boys.
I take my inspirations from all different people of different time and use wigs and hair pieces. My own hair is irrelevant to any of my characters, my hair is like a collapsing bird's nest most days...
If you do want to use your own hair as a personal trademark style, why not do something totally new and unique to you?
Otherwise, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield, Betty Boop and Loise Brooks are the best short haired examples of glamour I can think of.

My hairs the same style, I pin it all up.
Side parting and then just twist it back in sections, and fluff the ends up. Little wispy bits all fall out and it look prettiful.

hairbands are also good, there arent many good ones around. I normally go for plain tortoise shell ones to hold back one side of my hair, as clips dont work as its so thick.
I have the same/similar hair style that you have now. Finger waves looks good but i find difficultly curling or styling my hair any other way than straight due to its thickness.

Oh thank you all so much for your ideas! You really are a wonderful bunch of lurvlies!
Think I will go away and look at curling it, but if that doesn't work, may just stick with a slick "Chicago" style bob and gel the front into curls on my cheek.
Thank you again so much... I would have been online and said thank you earlier, but my mum is poorly with cancer so I haven't been online in a while...
