    Default Stocking care question??

Hey everyone. I wear stockings and such pretty much everyday of the week except during my lazy days. I just thought that i would ask about proper wash and care techniques for them so I can make them last I usually hand wash them in my sink with a mild detergent and then rinse with cold water and lay them over the back of a chair to dry. Is that along the right lines or is there some kind of trick to it .

It's just about right, but officially you're supposed to hang them up by their toes (as the toes are reinforced and generally hidden you don't need to worry so much about getting snags, and the rest of the leg can dry safely.

Don't hang over a varnished chair - I did this in a posh hotel once and the moisture went into the varnish making it a different colour! As the chair dried it gradually returned to normal but it was rather scary at the time.

Radiators aren't a good idea either as there are too many little places to cause snags.

I generally hang over the over-bath-thingy as fine nylons dry overnight so shouldn't cause too much disruption.

The other useful tip (and another 'do as I say, not do as I do!') is to keep the cellophane bag they came in, that way you can store them safely.

Opaques and fishnets can survive the washing machine quite happily but never tumble dry as the heat can damage lycra fibres if done repeatedly.

Hooray I have been on the right track
When I dry mine I drape a old towel on the back of one of my arm chairs and lay them like that. Only my cubans have the renforced toes so I don't think that hanging my other ones would be a smart move on my part. *Note to self* keep fishnets out of dryer... that happened earlier this week.
Eek that incident with the hotel chair would have scared me lol I can't even imagine what my land lords would do if I got color transfer onto their chairs (hense the old towel)... i'm pretty sure my rent would go higher *cringe*.
I'm also happy to say that I do keep them in their original bags it makes them easier to store and has most then likely saved them from the snags of my wooden drawers.
    Thanks for the tips!!

I also put my stockings on with a pair of wrist-length gloves so as not to snag them.

i am confused to why there is a blurb for nike trainers on a thread about stocking :s

i can't even keep my collection in my draw now due to fear of them getting snagged as it is over flowing i've resorted to storing them in two large posh stiff carrier bags on a shelf in my wardrobe ops:

Go to the Haberdashers, get a couple of meters of cheap lining silk, and line your drawer with it! You can just attach it round the sides with double-sided tape...

I love this thread All these good tips I need to start obeying.

I use some short cotton gloves to slip mine on and I sometimes hairspray them as it's meant to make them last longer. I've also heard about popping them in the freezer is meant to prolong the life, but after an incident with frozen shower gel there is an embargo on anything that isn't food being put in there
