    Default Refurbishing a corset

    Hey all

I looking to cover an old corset with new material- i have seen this done very effectively and want to revamp the old one instead of having to get rid of it (it was the victim of a fabric dye experiment gone wrong).

Im struggling the most with the lace holes and how to cover the metal rings without the new material fraying lots.

Also, this is a well worn corset so the fabric has taken on my shape a bit, its quite difficult to get the new material to follow this.

    Any advice?

If you're quite handy have you thought about replacing the eyelets? That way your new fabric will be sandwiched between them. Use fray check on the holes that you make. if you don't want to replace the eyelets my suggestion would be to sew all the way round them. looping your needle through the middle of the ring and round into your fabric so that the ring gets covered by the thread. This would make the holes smaller though and I'm not sure how hardwearing this would be. Hope this helps.
    good luck

Maybe sew button holes in the new fabric where the lace holes are? I recovered a corset doing a very rushed job, and I used frilly lace to cover up the fact the new fabric was loose over the old lace holes. It's ok for a stage costume - but I wouldn't recommend it for one you wanted to wear out.

Incidently I do have an eyelet putting-in device that I bought years ago and have not used- I will give it a go! Cheers!

Thats a really good idea, thank! I will have a go at replacing the eyelets and if that doesnt work will do the button holes. Its for a costume so shouldnt need to be too hardy! xxx

Really hope this isnt too late, but if you actually manage to get the eyelets out, the chances are that you will fray or tear the fabric even wider meaning that you cant get a second eyelet back in- The eyelets will have been put in with the intention of them not coming out at all, and removing them will probably render the corset useless- if its at all possible can you not take the new covering just to the edge of the back panel, or to the edge of the eyelets, so you either have a contrasting panel, which may look attractive, or so you can stitch a second, smaller section on the other side of the eyelets (ribbon may even work if you are using a plain colour) the lacing should cover most of the 5mm stripe between the eyelets and you will retain the strength of your corset!
    Hope this gelps!
