Ripping it off
As always i need advice. Ive got a routine all sorted but have come to an abrupt hault as i cant figure out the best way to get my clothes torn/ripped off. my plan is for a zorro type slashing at my clothes and them to fall off.
What would be the best wat to achieve this???
Poppers?
Velcro?
Any advice u can give would be greatly appreciated!!
Love and wiggles

I've never used velcro myself, but at a recent gig there was a discussion on how velcro is the tool of the devil himself, when it comes to costume fastenings!

There's a pub in Bethnal Green called: 'The Star.' Every first Monday of the month they hold a Female Amateur Comedienne night. Anyone can have a go at stand up, as long as you are a woman.
One particular lady had us in fits, going on about the Brazilian, to emphasise her point, she stepped up to the microphone, ripped two pieces of velcro apart, sucked her cheeks in, went cross-eyed and doubled up holding her crotch. Does it hurt? Oh yes!
Sorry about that, better hand the thread back now.

Another thing about Velcro is it will make that nifty ripping noise as it's pulled apart as well. So it will sound like your clothes are being ripped too.

Thing is if you want the clothes to appear to be slashed it's not quite the same as being ripped, maybe if you had a helper in the wings you could use radio control.
Radio control model makers use flexible cables to run from the servos to control surfaces, there's no reason I can think of why those couldn't be built into a costume and rigged to pull pins out that would allow bits of the costume to drop off, it's a more complicated way of doing things and does mean you depend on assistant to get things right, but it would mean that in a "Sword fight" you wouldn't have to actually touch the items in order for them to drop, which might make for a very dramatic show

Personally I hate velcro I have ruined so many costumes using it and it eventually loses its ability to stick together. I think magnets sounds like a fantastic idea though

I was thinking up an idea and ran across the same problem, what I envisaged but never got around to trying was actually was cutting the costume off (it was a paper suit so cost wasn't a big issue) what I thought was having a small blade attached to my wrist via a bit of string or elastic then suriptiously? useng it to cut off the costume as opposed to taking it off. don't know how helpful this is or if it would work in your circumstances but you could adapt the principle to include slashing and ripping just be very careful lol.
