Info on Leeds Varities.....
In 1865 Charles Thornton opened his "New Musical And Fashionable Lounge". Who could have guessed almost a century and a half later, this much loved venue would still be packing audiences in and its reputation would have spread around the globe.
Against all odds, the City Varieties, (As it later became known), has survived virtually unchanged across three centuries, while most other Victorian musicals have passed into history. Over the years, the Varieties' stage has welcomed many of the worlds greatest entertainers, including a young Charlie Chaplin, Harry Houdini, Lillie Langtry, Harry Lauder and Mickey Rooney as well as helping to launch the careers of Frankie Vaughan, Ken Dodd, Ray Alan (and Lord Charles!), Roy Hudd and Barry Cryer. In 1953 the Varieties became the home of "The Good Old Days" - The BBC's longest running variety show lasting for over 30 years, with a world wide audience which brought international fame to the Varieties.
The Varieties is now undergoing vital restoration work which will breath new life into the venue for future generations... "Steeped In History... still regarded as the best venue for stand up in the land." Dara O'Briain Tickling the English.
The £9.2 million refurbishment of City Varieties is supported by £5.2 million by Leeds City Council and an award of £2.74 million from The Heritage Lottery Fund of the £1.26 million, over £550,000 has already been raised and the regeneration campaign is seeking to remain the remaining £700,000. The City Varieties is a part of our history... now you can help change the future.WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread
