Don't give up, lovely!
If your teacher is worth their weight in gold, by the time you get around to the peeling and tassel sections in your class, you'll already have built up the confidence to reveal yourself... And look - some of the greatest performers out there are ladies of the more curvy variety - check out Dirty Martini! It's the attitude and confidence (and having a great and original act, of course) that makes a great performer, not the size of the waistline; sassiness comes from the way you hold yourself (so to speak!!)
Good luck!

Well I've been wanting to take lessons for months, and always hesitate because I'm so shy, so congratulations for having the courage to go in the first place

I think it would be shame for you to put off the classes if you enjoy them, when the reality is that most of the women taking the class with you are probably self consious about something themselves (you know what us women are like!). I always find watching people who ooze confidence reagrdless of what they look like the most inspiring, but I also know how it feels to feel out of place and lacking confidence. I think if you can fake the confidence now, you might find that after a few more lessons you naturally feel more confident simply because you're still going and loving it.
I sound like I know what I'm on about..maybe time to take my own advice...!

P.s I notice you're in London, which classes are you taking?

Definitely don't give up! Lala is right about attitude and confidence. When I saw Immodesty Blaise's show a few years ago, Dirty Martini was utterly mesmerising! There was another girl who had a perfect figure, but her act was so bland that I can't even remember her name now. If you act confident, people will think you're fabulous - fact!
Merise is right too. Everyone in that class will have worries about some part of their bodies. When I did a beginners class, only 3 of us showed up for the tassel twirling and one girl had been really nervous. She'd been planning to stick the tassels onto a bikini top but, as soon as we all took our bras off, she thought "what the hell". She was so much better on that last week because the worry had gone. On the intermediate course I did, one of the most slender women there had a baby belly hiding under her clothes... once she saw we didn't care, she didn't either.
Stick with it. I bet you look fabulous

True, its just hard knowing I;ve put this weight on and still at it. I'm on a diet and its coming off slowly, just wanted to be abit less wobbley! It didn't help that I have a rubbish skirt and frumpy top as I was in a rush. I thik now I've spoken to some of the girls at the class and will wear something a bit more sexier, maybe my confidence will go up a bit!1 Thanks for the advice
Oh and Merise, I go with burlesque baby, its in convent garden gym by the transport museum,

sweetie dont worry about the dreaded weight issue...tonight at our class, the last class in the term we did tassels and every single one of us got them puppies out and worked them baby!!!!! im a size 22 and an L cup so i was by far the biggest there not to mention the downward facing, almost floor brushing nipples cos of breast feeding my two babies...so yep hunny i know where you are coming from.
there were about ten of us in the class and not one of us the same shape or size but by golly we gave it our all and had in my opinion THE BEST LESSON OF THE WHOLE TERM!!!!!
as you go through your classes you will gain more body awareness and confidence your self image may even alter, please please please dont let it get you to the giving up stage, that would be such a shame, revel in your femininity and love your curvy bits...everyone has bits they would change about themselves but dont let that stop you working toward what could be a really fantastic opportunity not only for yourself but for your future audiences too...much love hunny. xxxxx

The class will boost your confidence. I think most people have something they think makes them 'different' to the rest - with me it was age, I was older than everyone in my class (including the teacher) by some considerable margin, but although I felt excruciatingly self-concious at first, by the end forgot I was old enough to be some of the girls' mother, and the camaraderie of the girls in my class was amazing. Burlesque is for everyone - that's one of the things that drew me to it.
Go for it!!

I teach burlesque classes and it always amazes me that the first two classes the girls come fully covered and by the end of the course its hard to get them to keep their clothes on!
I once had one of my more volupte ladies tell me she wouldn't have gone to the rocky horror show in the outfit she was wearing ( she looked stunning btw) if it weren't for the classes- so hang in there petal- to coin a phrase from gok wan * its all about the confidence*
Learn to love your favorite bits and forget about the rest, your always more critical of yourself than anyone else will be!!!
