Default I want to learn to sing the blues.

Does any know where I can get singing lessons but help to sing in a kind of raw delta blues/worksong kind of way think 'Vera Ward Hall' 'O Brother Where Art Thou' style?

I don't want to sound perfect pitch or have a really strong voice but sound more natural and deep and sad. I go some days not even speaking so to sing out loud is taking me a lot of guts would like some help to get more confidence in my little voice.

It's odd I grew up with my dad playing old blues on his guitar and hated it and now really love it.

I don't know about blues lessons but I can give you some general singing tips if it's helpful.

It might not sound like much fun, of exactly what you want to do, but I would recommend having some classical singing lessons/vocal coaching. It will help you strengthen your voice, and really just make a big, gutsy noise, without knackering your vocal chords!

I had classical/opera singing lessons in my early teens, much against my will. I wanted to be in a grunge band at the time but my dad insisted I learnt to sing properly. He'd been in loads of bands in the 70's and had seen to many untrained singers ruin their voices!

The more I did, the more I saw the benifit of learning to breath properly and project my voice, without putting a strain on it. Many of the techniques I learnt were covered again when I did teacher training, as people didn't know how to use their voices effectively in the classroom.

It'll be particularly important if you aren't using your voice regularly. Too many singers end up with throat problems from all that screaming!

I mostly sing along to people like Janis Joplin now, in the car, but I'm using the same techniques that I would if I was (god forbid!) singing opera on stage!

Good luck, and go for it!

Hi yes Petes right I'm in Croydon or Croydoom as it's more fondly known

I think I understand what you mean about learning the classical way first. When I started guitar I wanted to learn Metallica and my dad kept teaching me blues and it made me cringe (except bottleneck I liked playing that way). I'm happy singing along to songs all the time but when it's silent I find it so hard to hold a tune I get embarrassed at the sound of my own voice and so it comes out really out of tune. Any tips would be great.

And I think I sound like a boy, even when I've talked on camera and I hear it back I sound like a boy lol. This may be another random idea I put on the backburner.

I know theres lots of singing teachers in the city but I'm not sure how to describe the style I want to sound like other then ringing people up and asking for lessons to sing lke an Alabama housemaid in the 1920s who thinks no ones listening, minus the accent?!

    ...Ah apperantly it's Appalachian gospel?!
