Coming to Leeds!

Hi all,

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am to have Jonny Porkpie come and teach for us on the 27th November for one day only!

The workshops are verbal so boylesquers also welcome!

The Arc of the Tease
Arc and Storyline in Burlesque numbers
From the moment the curtains open, you have just a few minutes to establish, develop, and conclude a burlesque mini-drama... all while taking off your clothes. You have the tools: a great concept, dance skills, risque humor, glittery costumes, bedazzled props. But what's the deference between creating an okay number and creating a number that will have the audience cheering? The answer is arc. This class explains how burlesque performers can benefit by thinking of themselves as mini-playwrights. It will examine the dramatic structure of a burlesque act, and discuss ways to establish your concept quickly and effectively, develop that concept to a boffo conclusion, and to hit the most important beats along the way. Developed by Jonny Porkpie and Nasty Canasta (together, the first-ever winner of the Burlesque Hall of Fame "Most Innovative" trophy), and taught by Jonny Porkpie. Come ready to discuss and verbally workshop either a new number you'd like to develop or a "problem" act you'd like to improve.

New York-Style Burlesque
Dominating the subversive paradigm
"Wow, I didn't know we were allowed to do that sort of thing in burlesque," said the performer visiting New York for the first time as she watched the show. One of the epicenters of the American neo-burlesque movement, New York City is known for its audacious and off-kilter approach to striptease. Not only are you allowed to drop your inhibitions and embrace the preposterous... it can lead to brilliance. We'll discuss how the use of humor, politics and social commentary so popular in New York can give a number a little extra subversive va-va-voom, techniques for generating unique ideas, the obstacles that can stand in the way of fearless performance, and ways in which you can give yourself permission to do whatever you want on stage... as long as it's entertaining. It's the city that spawned three of the last seven winners of the Burlesque Hall of Fame pageant, and nurtured such insane creative forces as international burlesque stars Tigger!, Julie Atlas Muz, Dirty Martini, and Jo Boobs... what can its insanity do for you? Jonny Porkpie—recently named the city's "Best Naked Impresario" by NY Press—helps you spike your performances with a shot of the Big Apple.

Jonny Porkpie, the "Burlesque Mayor of NYC" was also recently named New York City's "Best Naked Impresario" by the NY Press. He is the co-creator, -producer, and writer of the award-winning Pinchbottom Burlesque, "where burlesque meets theater, buys it a drink, and takes it to bed". Pinchbottom was named NY's "Best Burlesque" by New York Magazine and the Village Voice, called "daring, funny, imaginative, and titillating for all tastes" by the Sunday Telegraph, and was the first-ever recipient of the "Most Innovative" award from the Burlesque Hall of Fame. He is the author of the burlesque murder mystery "The Corpse Wore Pasties", (Hard Case Crime) which Publishers Weekly described as "witty and telling". He comes to burlesque from a theatrical background.

The class is a verbal experience rather than a physical one but you are welcome to bring a long a routine that you might be struggling with and want feedback on.

The ARC class is an hour an a half and the New York style will be between an hour to an hour and a half.

Each class is £20 but £35 if you book both. Classes must be pre paid and are limited to 15 people. Payment can be made to Jonny via paypal porkpie@pinchbottom.com

Classes will be held at Arch Dance Studio in Leeds city centre Arch Dance Studio - Google Maps

Thanks
Dalia
