What do you mean by "learning burlesque"? It's not really a dance style or set of routines so you can't learn it in a set of classes. You might be better doing a good general dance class and then doing some lessons to learn some of the old standards you are interested in like perhaps fan dances or balloon pops?

A few courses that last a few weeks is actually great! If you are serious and want to learn 'properly' you should take some workshops/ courses but then you must continue your education and development yourself. That could also include EvilDrNeil's suggestions! You've got to be proactive! Read books, watch movies, get inspired and start creating an act!

Where i am from i never had any lessons available to me when i started, so i educated myself, created a couple acts and costumes and performed wherever i could. It's a learning process, you are not just going to start out amazing, you have to take some risks, learn from them and polish your acts as you go along. An instructor will help steer you in the right direction.

Hi Sweety! I think we all know what it is like when the Burly Bug bites and you want to throw yourself into a world of magic and glitter, or swarovski's in my case! I took local classes a few years ago and for many reasons didnt find it at all helpful, But then I took ones from teachers who actually wanted to pass on all they knew and help you develop your own style instead of cheesecake cut outs, not that ther is anything wrong with cheesecake, its just not for everyone! What I am saying is research you class/teacher, find out if they perform or used to. Then if they offer advanced classes take them, as moon moose and Dr evil have both pointed out, learning different dance styles is always helpfull, Im currently working on a routine which has nothing to do with belly dancing but has alot of belly dancing moves in it, Salsa, latin, ballroom, Jazz, anything really. Plus as Moon Moose also pointed out, what inspires you?!!! Take all you love from films, music, places, cities history and get it bubbling up into a routine when your ready! When you are ready and have your own routine that is all your work it is the most amazing feeling to see people enjoy it! Good luck and let us know how you get on! xxx
