Can you help a beginner in Brighton??
Hello all.
I live in Brighton and I would REALLY like to get started and get a job as a burlesque performer. I would mainly be up for singing but would also give anything else a go. I have no experience of performing burlesque but I've been singing since I was 9 and have been classically trained, done backing vocals in a band working the social clubs around the north of England and got my higher diploma in vocals from Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM). I love performing and think the whole burlesque/cabaret scene is where I would really thrive.
I would really appreciate any help, hints and ideas that you could give me of how to get into it, who I need to go to etc. :help:
Thanks very much you lovely lot!

Hi honey,
Have you considered some of the classes in burlesque to give you a taste of what you'd be in for? If you google Burlesque and Brighton there are a few classes available.
Or I would suggest getting along to some of the shows on at the moment. The Brighton festival is nearly over but you might be able to catch something if you're quick. I tragically missed out on tickets to Le Scandal which was on earlier in the month!
I'm actually based in Brighton too and was planning on getting together with some like-minded individuals soon but I need some time to get myself sorted out first. Email me if you like and I'll give you a heads up when I start organising things.
Best of luck!

Hey Bella.
Thanks for getting in touch. I have looked at doing a burlesque course but won't be able to do it for a little while 'cause I'm a bit short on cash at the mo. I looked at the festival events and there is only one burlesque show left to catch, which is tonight, so not sure if there are tickets left.
Do you know of anywhere I could watch a show in Brighton after the festival? I have heard of the Boutique Theatre as someone I know performs with them. I had asked her if she could help me get into performing or tell me other places to go but she didn't seem to want to help me! Which was nice!
I would definitely be up for this get together you are planning. Hopefully by then I'll have started to get a taste for what it's all about.

P.S. I tried to email you but it wouldn't send, said it wasn't a valid email address.

I know I'm such a ditz. It's actually belladejac.co.uk not .com!
Hmm...pity about your contact. Well I suppose like any other performing art it can be a bit competative.
Are you actually interested in the dancing side of it or do you think you'd prefer to just sing (I don't mean just in a negative way, I sing also) in some kind of old jazz/burlesque style performances?
Aside from the boutique theatre at concorde I'm not sure if there is a regular performance on at candy bar by some of the lovely ladies from MoB, or it could have just been for the festival I'm not sure.

Haha! I'll let you off. We all make mistakes!
Yeah I think I'd mainly want to just sing, although I'd be up for learning how to dance just to see what it's like! I'll have to try and get myself along to Concorde 2 to watch some shows.
So do you perform anywhere particular?

I've been dancing in a lot of other styles for many a year back in Australia and did dance at uni but have only really got into burlesque since coming to the UK. But I've always loved anything retro! Brighton it seems doesn't have many regular nights though.
What kind of singing do you do? I think there are a few swing/jazz nights about, if you got a bit of experience in the retro music scene you might be able to make some contacts to get into burlesque. Or perhaps if you know some other musicians you could organise your own performance?
