    Question How to learn splits?

    :help:
    Dear performers;

I'm not a flexible one:worried:- but I really really want to learn how to do the splits (the version with one leg in front and one leg behind).
I do stretch my thighs sporadically ( I know that's not enough). How often and what exercises should I do?

Any advice for me? I'm really grateful for any good tips!:excited:

    greets, Belle

This is a pretty good overview of stretching for the splits:

As for frequency to get that level of flexibility you probably need to be stretching every day if not a couple of times a day. I'm another highly inflexible one and it took me about 3-4 weeks of daily work to be able to throw head high kicks (when I was kick-boxing not for general purposes!) which is probably roughly equivalent to being able to just about to a straddle splits! Based on this experience I would have thought it would probably take in the order of 6-8 weeks to be able to do a (comparatively) comfortable splits.

I recommend yoga, it is great for flexability and general conditioning. Additionally it teaches you how to relax, which helps you take stretches further!

I've been thinking about the splits again lately as it happens...

I needed to do the splits a while back for a can-can.

Stretching every day for a month, I got closer and closer.

Didn't quite get all the way to the splits in time for the show and have since stopped stretching and am back to my old unsplittable self.

Wonder if it's possible for anyone do it with a couple of months worth of stretching?
It's a handy skill to have!

    Smile splits

start pilates! pilates is really good for stretching and strength. plus they know how much to do and when not to do too much. best to go for classes on these things because they know what you're doing and you don't wanna hurt yourself!

    Thanks for your responses,
    and for your link, Evildrneil.
Now I know it's going to be quite a lot of work, but I never thought I'd learn this, so you really encouraged me by saying it was doable in 1-2 months or so..
I will start stretching today (tatarataaaahhh)!
And if I ever get into the splits (front splits, side splits is hopeless), I will post it here, including a picture of mine (maybe I should take a before picture now).
Would be cool, wouldn't it? (I learned at school that you british people say things like that all the time :"it would, wouldn't it" "that's it, isn't it"? Is that true? Do you?)
Maybe we could open a new thread: The splits thread! :excited:
And all people who start training for the splits can post their progress and join the split- club! And as dinner, we'll always have banana splits to motivate us! :cooler:

    What do you think?

Haha, it's true! I didn't realise this was a feature of British speech - it's just one of those things you do without realising it, I guess ...
