Stage name concern (June St. Clair)
Hey everyone!! I found some very intriguing information while in Chapters after work a few weeks ago. I was flipping through a book called "Pretty Things: The Last Generation of Burlesque Queens" by Liz Goldwyn, which I plan on purchasing some time soon, probably when my paycheck comes in
When I came across short biographies of the supreme queens of burlesque so I started reading. I was just casually flipping through when I stumbled upon a stunningly beautiful woman named June St. Clair, I was shocked to find out that she shared the same last name as me and for a half second thought about changing my stage name. I read further into her story and found out that she had lived a very tragic life and that not much was known about her until the release of Pretty Things because her family had been ashamed of her profession. I seriously can not find anything on the internet about her except for quotes from "Pretty Things". June's niece gave Liz the information after the airing of the Pretty Things documentary. I read that she had been very close to her brother (which I am as well) and that she had committed suicide (a section of the note is actually in the book) I felt a saddness for her and I felt a strange connection as well. While walking out of Chapters with my new purchase (Burlesque and the Art of the Teese by Dita Von Teese and Fetish and the Art of the Teese which I read fully that night!) I decided not to change my stage name like I originally thought I should but that I should take it and use in pride in rememberance of the beautiful "Platinum Princess" June St. Clair.
Do I have the right mind set about this?? If its recommended that I change it I will I just want some opinions on this.
My own stage name is based on my real first name (Megan) which means "Pearl" in Greek and "St. Clair" is the original form of my Scottish last name (Sinclair). So ya this is a massive coincidence that our names are very similar.. I'm not even gonna start on the whole "we're both blondes thing haha"

I don't think you should change your name. It was a coincidence and you have taken the right attitude towards it. Paying hommage to someone who you admire is fine in my book and it's not like she is performing today, and you don't have exactly the same name. It's like with my name there are loads of Scarletts, as long as there is no out and out plagarism then it should be fine. :twothumbs:

Yeah I agree, keep your name, you have your reasons for being called what you are! Loads of burlesquers have the same/similar surnames, so even if you were to change it it would still be the same as someone else's anyway! x
