Hi Everyone!
Hello everyone!
I was online doing some late research for a burlesque costume I am trying to put together and I found this site and just had to join. Hopefully some of you can help me out because part of me thinks I have no idea what I am doing.
I used to be a club dancer but quit to become a new mom. But he is old enough to leave with a babysitter and my old club started doing a burlesque night once a month and invited me to join. I did my first show last month and had a blast. There is a troupe that performs but other than that all the other girls are just putting their stuff together from scratch like me. I think out of everyone I am the girl who is the most into it though, because here I am at 1:30am researching costume and music ideas.
This months theme is Celebrating the New Year and I am having a hard time finding some music that portrays that. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, when it comes to costumes, are a lot of you do-it-yourself-ers? I am just starting out and as a new mom I don't have the money to lay down on those beautiful, elaborate costumes I am so in love with. If anyone has any sort of tips and tricks to pulling together a decent costume that they would like to share I would be so thankful.
Anyway, I'm glad I found this site and I hope to make some friends here soon! Thanks for your time!WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

Awww - welcome to MoB sweetie, but be warned......this site is deliciously addictive!!!
As a newbie performer too I think I speak for many when I say we are mostly too poor to buy fancy off the peg costumes and have to get DIY creative. However, I'm seriously rubbish at it so will leave it to much cleverer and more experienced ladies to be of more help.
As for music for New Year themed routines, that's a toughie. Was looking myself recently and couldn't find anything - maybe others have some good ideas???
Sorry I can't be of more help - just wanted to say hi really!!!!
kisses

Thanks for the welcome. Glad I'm not the only one stumped by my music ordeal, lol.

For New Year (as it's a toughie) I'd probably suggest big band music. And costumes, I'm a DIYer as well. Lot's of time, patience and trawling E-bay

How many things am I going to get thrown at me if I suggest "Start of Something New" by Gabriella and Troy from High School Musical? :duck:
Abba have a song called Happy New Year (hmmm I know)
Ok ok I get the picture...
What about "Let's Start the New Year Right" by Bing Crosby, or you can get a better version by Frank Sinatra on iTunes, or "Brand New Start" by Paul Weller, The J.Geils Band and Van Morrison both do versions of "Start All Over Again".
If you want a fifties vibe - the Paragons have got a doo wop song called "Let's Start Over Again"
Although if it were me.....I'd have to work something out to John Lennon's "Just Like Starting Over", because I love his bad Elvis impression on it, and I like the changes in it and the very upbeat nature
And depending on your musical tastes - Jimi Hendrix, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, B.B. King and many others have done versions of Auld Lang Syne (I'd love to see someone use the Hendrix)
And Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall do a very gentle "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" but it's probably only suitable for the most graceful of fan dances
Edit: actually I've just found there's an iTunes Essentials mix of songs for New Year! Check out iTunes Essentials/My Groove/NewYearsSongs - they suggest Bringing in A Brand New Year - B.B. King, Next Year - Foo Fighters, What's Another year - Johnny Logan (snigger) and over 40 other ideas, some better than others but worth a lookThe Russian Doll Lass - like Shrek's onion, but with sequins...
