Best Way To Learn???
Hiya,
I'm new to the burlesque world and would love to learn this fantastic art form, I was just wondering what the best way to do this would be? I've seen quite a few dvd's around but don't know if they would be helpful. I was also wondering if anyone knows of any classes around the West Midland area?
Love

Welcome to the group Jezebel, im also new here and to the burlesque world!
I wish that I could answer your post, but im in the same boat just now. Depending on where abouts you are, there are some classes ive noticed on here, for what they are they seem reasonably priced and very exciting, but unfortunately I have to wait until febuary to make it to one:wallbash: lol

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the best way to learn is trial and error

I'd also add that some of the best things I've learnt has been watching other performers onstage (well before I even dreamt of performing). Both what works and what doesn't - and of course what not to do under any circumstances

Hello,
I'm exactly in the same boat. I've been to see a few shows and now I'm eager to join in. I've spotted a website named Polestars: Pole Dancing, Burlesque, Can-Can, Cheerleading & Cocktail Making Lessons & Hen Parties.
Although I haven't seen any reviews, they do taster courses for £20 in Birmingham. I figure that's not a huge amount to lose so I shall be giving this a go soon.
Hope this helps,
Kinky_Chick xx

Hi there!
I'm a new girl as well, but I have already done one show. I had to pull together a routine in like, 3 days, and the way I did it was watching dvds and just winging it really. Nothing will compare to taking real classes, but in the meantime I find that watching instructional dvds is helplful in that it ,at least, will give you a general idea of what is involved in a stage performance. And practice makes perfect. Though I am one to talk because I still need a lot of practice myself, lol.
Anyway, all I am trying to say is that watching dvds can't do any harm, and I have found them very beneficial, so perhaps you will too.
Good luck, and don't give up!!!

I'm a beginner too but from what i can see, I don't think any two girls learn in the same way. Some of them have been doing tap/ballet/gymnastics since childhood (lucky them!). Some come from working in the pole dancing clubs. Some start from scratch. I only started dancing a few years ago and took belly, pole and lap dancing classes before i even considered burlesque but they have all helped so much.
I took two basic lessons with an experienced burlesque dancer in the lead up to my first show. I still want to do a couple more for more intermediate techniques. And i'd love to learn hula hoop!!
I think it's best to watch the more experienced girls and learn the way they engage the crowd and manage their timing. It's like my art teacher used to tell us - drawing an object is 10% action and 90% observation. :-)
I also watch the originals like Lili St Cyr, Bettie Page, Tempest Storm and Sally Rand. They had some great tricks and i don't know what kind of training they did, if any. If you can find it, there's a great DVD called Varietease, a burlesque variety show from the 50's.

nice to see there is so many of us eager performers! I decided to take the dvd route to get a bit of practice before the classes, I ordered Princess Farhanas DVD Hot Moves for Cool Chics, and although the dvd looks a bit cheesy, I found it quite useful. It is quite fast paced but you've always got the pause button to run to. I am thinking about joining the Poelstars in Bristol as it seems to be the best of the bunch?hoping to find others that will be doing the same class.
anyway goodluck to you all!x
