New/Introduction
Never seen real burlesque or experienced anything to do with it (not a fantastic start!) but I am very interested.
My main objective being the popular "confidence and fitness", as I desperately need both!
About me?
I'm the tender age of 15, which means all this is very new to me but without being called too confident for my age I am interested in it all. Why not start young? Me & a group of friends are interested in it in a way to get fit, obviously with my age there's no chance of performing anywhere but as I said - why not start young?!
There's not much to me, other than my passion for dog training, behaviour & agility (which is a bit odd but often interests some!), photography and web design.
My main question is, is there any form of foundation training that can be done before I enter the classes? I'd order DVD's but I can't imagine my mam would be too happy reading what I'd bought with her credit card!! Is there anything for free over the internet I can look into that just goes over the very basics?
I'm hoping I'm not to be considered as too young - as I've wanted to go into pole dancing (again, for fitness) for ages but I like the fanciness of burlesque a bit more.
Thanks!
Cat

Sweetie - you really ARE too young at the moment. You need to be at least 18 to go to events as they are usually in licensed venues. I would also not recommend classes until you are 18 too. You AND your body have lots of developing left to do and it would really be the wisest move for you to wait.
As the mother of an 18 year old daughter I feel qualified to comment babes - sorry if I sound mean. Why not use the next few years to try lots of different forms of dance such as tap, ballet, jazz, contemporary, belly etc etc. This is a GREAT way of getting fit, keeping in shape and will really help with learning burlesque when you are 18.
You could also research into vintage fashions and music you like and there is nothing to stop you from inventing little routines at home. But as burlesque is linked with sexuality I would strongly advise that you leave it alone as you are too young to be thinking in that way really. Enjoy your youth and bide your time a little.
Yikes - I sound sooooo mean, sorry!!!!!!!!!

Nooo don't worry! My mind wasn't on the performing anyway, far from that!

I was actually told younger girls (although very limited clothing comes off!) were ok to do it, I genuinely didn't know there was an 18+ thing. I'm talking about classes of course, NOT performing or any form of club!!
I won't touch it then :twothumbs: I'm definately still interested in following this forum around though just to see what everyone is doing and how they are doing it. At least in 3 or 4 years time I'll be knowledgeable.
For now I shall just lurk

Haha!! I would strongly suggest you have a go at other styles of dance while you are waiting for burlesque. Most of us do another style and have some sort of dance background / experience....but not all.
I don't think there is a formal minimum age on taking burlesque classes but as the content is sexual by nature - even if you remain fully clothed, then I personally feel it is innapropriate for a 15 year old to take part in!!!!!! I may be wrong and other MoBsters might say different but I would just be un-comfortable with someone of your age doing burlesque.
I'm sooooooo mean - sorry!!!!!!!!!! Just see what others have to say too before you make your mind up but I know what I would have to say if my 15 year old daughter was doing it. Will probably get my wrists slapped by other MoBsters now for being a horrid meanie!!!!! Sorry folks!!!!!! I'm a really liberal, broad-minded person - honest!!

Lol No no it's ok!!! Cat! If you really are interested in getting fit, I personally would suggest you try Ballet, as it burns over 300 cals an hour and builds core muscles!!!
There is absolutely no harm in you lurking, it would at least give you knowledge for in a few years time. In fact My sister, who is only a year and a bit plder than you is on here herself.
Have fun Hun
OOOHHHHH... and Weighted Hula hoops are a FANTASTIC wasy to get in shape- i saw one today for £6.99 in TK Max!! xx

Hiya Cat, and welcome.
Check out the link pictures on the sides of this site and the "Videos" title (top right) - there are videos on YouTube that you can play around with. I'll agree with the "other form of dance" line too though. It'll build flexibility and strength and develop a sense of rhythme too. Good luck whatever you do.

Although there is no "formal" minimum age, most burlesque teachers and schools in my experience will not teach students who are under the age of 18. I've had it explained to me thus: Burlesque does involve stripping, which is an adult activity, therefore participants should be of adult age i.e. 18 or above.
But there's no reason why you can't research it and practice at home
.
Also, I wouldn't really recommend burlesque as a way to get fit, unless it was a specific "burlesquercise" class or something similar - not that I've actually ever seen one...
The burlesque classes I have taken have all involved an amount of movement and some (like the fan dancing class) have been quite energetic, but I wouldn't consider them a form of fitness exercise in the same way as other dance types, like belly dancing, as already mentioned.
Other types of dance classes like ballet or jazz would be an excellent way to get fit and toned, as already mentioned
