Lesson Dissappointment
when did 'burlesque' become so mainstream?
i went for a lesson yesterday and i may aswell have been at step aerobics with the pussycat dolls, not a hint of burlesque. Frustratingly I was the only participant to realise this!
If you wanted to learn boxing you wouldnt go to boxercise would you?!!
I had been looking forward to this for weeks (years technically as ive never lived near anyone that teaches before!) i feel sad inside

Did you discuss that with the organisers? They might need to know that they're giving out the wrong impression by advertising as being a burlesque class...
Sorry that you had a bad deal out of it
Let the organisers know that you were disappointed - maybe you can get at least a partial refund, who knows. Don't ask, don't get!

This is EXACTLY why we've implemented our new burlesque workshops section as it's designed to weed out the wheat from the chaff.
Unfortunately your experience is much more common that you think.

Sorry to read that - I wonder if you got the opportunity to find out the background of the teacher, or at least observe a class first?
There's a course in brum that I won't touch with a bargepole, as I probably know more about burlesque than the teacher.

Aw I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience hun. I've never been to a burlesque 'lesson', I don't really like the idea of them for the exact reasons you've just stated! Maybe it depends on who's teaching them? Burlesque has become vrey mainstream over the last couple of years... Where abouts are you based?

I can say that I have been to a few 'burlesque' classes over the years which should not have had 'burlesque' referenced anywhere in the title!
One of the other problems is people teaching without proper teaching training! These people will probably not be insured so if you injure yourself (e.g. falling over in heels in their class and break something) you would not be covered!
Sorry rant over!

Hmmm... Why not try organising an MoB meet-up in your area? Or, just get yourself down to your local burlesque night and get chatting to people, they're generally full of friendly open minded peeps who'd be happy to meet someone else sharing their interests...
This is just my opinion, but I think that burlesque classes might be good for keeping fir and having a laugh, but you certainly don't need to go to them in order to meet others in the 'scene' or get into performing, hell I've never had a lesson and I'm doing fairly well as a performer and have plenty of contacts! xx

Sorry to hear about your experience. If you ever catch one of Leya and Missy's classes (they seem to be touring all over the country and i went to one of them this week) or Venus Noir's workshops in the South West, please take the opportunity - you'll be guaranteed professionalism and a vast deal of knowledge.
