Smile Idea for a performance....what do you think

    Heya

I had this idea for a performance of like the history of women going backwards....so like starting with a modern day business women, going back to a house wife, going back to the Victorian era and then to cave women.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of some music i could use.....had half a thought about changing it for each section tho not sure but maybe starting with 9-5?

    What do people think?

9-5 is already a very popular song for burlesque routines as we recently established on another thread so you might want to re-think that song idea. Otherwise sounds good!!!!

Will have a think about possible song ideas.

Sounds interesting as a premise. Now have a good think about it and really develop it further.

What story are you telling. Is it a simple history of female development? Why is it backwards? Do you want to make any particular point to the audience? If so, how will you put that across to them and make them understand what you are trying to say? How does telling the story backwards help to acheive this end? And so on ...

    Hi honey
I don't want to put any dampeners on your idea but one of my most popular acts is called Evolution of Woman. It goes from Cave woman to modern woman and I have been doing over two years.
I am not saying don't do your idea but someone mentioned to me recently that they have stopped doing there cave woman routine as many bookers told them it was very similar to mine and would not book it.
    Sorry

I was going to say about Diva's routine. I was lucky enough to see it at the last Hot Muffins and it was brilliant!

Don't be put off though. It is great that you are coming up with ideas! I can't!

This sounds like it could be a really great performance. If you can develop it further and compare notes with Diva to make sure they're not essentially the same concept then I would love to see it.

Try not to worry too much about getting the perfect piece of music. For me the mark of a really good performance is knowing that the performer told the story and not the track. Obviously there are many exceptions to this but it's just a general rule I try to keep in mind when throwing ideas around.

Me too - I love big concepts in burlesque acts and the history of women has got to be a big enough concept that there's room in it for (at least) two very different routines! :twothumbs:

I think it depends on what the music is and what the concept is but in general I agree that it is horribly easy to let the music take over your act to the point where you are providing the background to it rather than vice versa!

However it can be very helpful to have music complement your chosen theme particularly if it is there making a satirical or comedic point that goes along with your act (I've found a comedic black metal stylee paen to IKEA for example that I'm using as a background to a comedy Viking routine, the sheer silliness of the song, not to mention the vaguely Scandanavian theme, complements the comedic silliness of the routine), so long as it is the music complementing the routine and not the other way around!

I think this is a very interesting concept (it's got me thinking).

I'm sure the main thrust of it will be about the changes backwards more than concentrating on the cave girl bit at the end, so provided you bear in mind that Diva's Evolution of Woman is very well known, I'm sure you can make this work and be different, and most importantly when you 'sell' it to promoters you don't concentrate of the cavegirl bit, because this is only a slight element of it.

What you could do, is go beyond cavegirl (perhaps even missing this stage) - could you finish up putting a big blobby costume on and being some primordial soup? (is that the right word?) like at the start of Fatboy Slim's Right Here Right Now or the Simpson's parody of it - or could you end up as Eve with an apple?

You could try and do a parody on the Guinness advert that had a similar concept, perhaps even using the Rhythm of Life as your soundtrack or part of it: YouTube - Best tv ad - Guinness "Rhythm of Life - Evolution"

Actually, thinking about parodying adverts - there's always YouTube - How cavemen invented the wheel ?. (Shall I get my coat?)

Or you could do something perhaps not going all the way back but looking at changing fashions over last 100, 200 ish years.......it might be fun to see whether you could be really clever with some costume engineering in the style of quick change artistes by taking bits off or adapting clothes to get from one look to the next...trying to explain this - say taking arms off an 80's style dress to make a 60's go-go sleeveless shift dress and then perhaps unfolding a layer of this to make it into a 20's flapper dress with fringing. Does that make any sense? And you could perhaps do it to the Propellerheads feat. Shirley Bassey History Repeating?

Here's an idea: (ignore the singing, check out the costume change ideas) YouTube - Vizage - Britain's Got Talent 2008 - Quick Change Act

Song ideas (some corny): End of Time - Sarah Vaughn or Perry Como, You're History - Shakespeare's Sister, Back in Time - Huey Lewis & the News, Right Back Where We Started From - Maxine Lewis, The End of History - Fionn Regan, Go Back - Crabby Appleton, Take Out Time - Ainslie Henderson, Let Forever Be - Chemical Brothers, Right Here Right Now - Fatboy Slim, Child in Time - Deep Purple, Time is Running Out - Muse...sorry these might not have the right feel to them, but they're the first I can think of off the top of my head....I'll keep thinking.

Or perhaps you could do a reverse history again to something like History Repeating to show how sexy was done through the ages? You could be taking/bringing sexy back haha So you could have something quick overtly sexy, lapdancing/poledancing/booty shaking at the start going back through the ages slowly covering up and perhaps at the end daring to smile behind a fan or showing an ankle......mind you this might be a little to subtle/intelligent for some audiences.......I will shut up now.....
The Russian Doll Lass - like Shrek's onion, but with sequins...
