Pampered Pooches
Im so sick of seeing people spend so much money on their dogs getting pampered. I understand to keep your dog groomed, but I was reading a booklet for a doggy day spa, and it had Mud spas, detox, nail polish!!! Im sick of people treating their pets as pampered humans. Wont this cause personality issues with these dogs? And do you REALLY think the dogs enjoy this...? I dont..
Well thats my rant for the day.
Thanks for reading...WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

As the owner of two dogs I completely agree! That spa would make a nice day out for (some) humans, but its not the kind of thing dogs enjoy (hell, even human children would probably get bored to tears an hour or two in) and particularly not from strangers, they're going to spend most of their "pampered day out" wondering why you've left them alone with strange people in this strange place.

Also - mud treatments??? Save yourself the cash and just take the dog out for a walk in the park after it's been raining. It's free, I garantee the dog will have a much better time and will have no trouble finding all the mud its skin could possibly desire!
These kind of expensive treatments for dogs are really about making the human spend money to feel like they're an extra specially good owner, whereas actually a lot of it is at best totaly irrelevant to the dog, or actually at its expense. Take those expensive designer doggie clothes you can get. Some dogs, particularly older, arthritic ones will appreciate a warm waterproof jacket as the weather turns bad and it can help them stay more mobile for longer, but you can get these coats easily enough at a local pet store, or your vet's and they're comparatively cheap. You might feel you're being a great owner by spending £100s or £1000 on a designer version but who honestly thinks the animal cares whether its dior, armani or whatever - it's not like they can even read the label!
Hair dye's bad enough but tattoos?
They actually hurt, someone is causing pain to their dogs for the sake of an aesthetic effect that will not benefit the poor creature in any way at all? I'd argue that is actually a matter for the RSPCA.

I LOVE to pamper my boys! I spend hours bathing them and brushing their hair. They both love the water and the hair dryer! My little pom especially loves getting his hair cut - he just lies on his back and lets me chop away.
Now that being said, i would not pay for someone else to do it because I love the time we spend doing it together - and i would be worried in case my pooches got frighted. I have never heard of dogs getting cosmetic tattoos - only serial numbers in there ears for identification - which i am not against. I think if you want to spoil your dog that is all fine and well but these mud baths and tattoos nonsense is a bit much.

Austens idea of exfoliation!

That's rather different from the spas though, if nothing else because it's you doing it. From the dog's perspective it's playing around in the water and then getting attention, cuddles and a groom from mum,
always a plus, especially if their fur's getting a little tangled as Pom's can so easily (that's as, if not more, uncomfortable for dogs as it is for humans - at least tangled hair doesn't stop us moving our arms and legs around).
I think this is the most important thing here - dogs don't care how much money you spend on them, its the time you spend with them that's important and that's something you cannot buy.
Tee Hee - that's my kind of dog, he's adorable!

I too pamper my pooch in a way that is "normal", grooming them yourself is fine. Thats something the dogs love!! But sending them to some strange place with some strange lady, they are going to think its the vet...my dog remembers the vet...lol
People think its cute and all but are they just doing this for their own ego? Or do they actually care about their dog?
Thank you all for your msgs, oh and Beau Rocks your dog is soo cute.
This is my doggy - Bailey (white) and his mum (brown)

I totally agree I have three dogs and three cats plus countless other animals. And the closest they have ever got to a doggy spa is going in the bath after rolling in mud and a dead seal and me accidently turning the whirlpool fuction on. Brushing and bathing dogs and cat should be do by the owner as a form of bonding not at a doggy spa

Great point Penny! A lot of this stuff seems to me to be more like good old-fashioned consumerism rather than anything to do with the dog's welfare. It's more "oh, look at that diamond studded collar, it's sooo cute I must have it"
- the fact that you're actually going to put it on the dog rather than yourself, as you would do if you saw some fantastic shoes instead, is irrelevant. The impulse to buy and display it is about the owner and only the owner, not the dog or what is or is not best for it.
Awww - they're both adorable!

Totally agree - dog spas!... whatever next! lol!
I love my baby dog to bits and have become a little dog obsessed since getting him, but jeez this is one step too far!
Here's a pic of my lovely black labrador puppy, he's called Rocco and is the cutest dog ever (a little biased), but i think you'll agree he is a sweetheart in this pic!
