tips for back pain?
Hey all, I've suffered with my back for years. I don't have to do anything strenuous but the smallest wrong turn and I get waves of agony up the left side. Yesterday it hit me so I bad I ended up lying on the bathroom floor before I even realised what had happened. I've been to the doctors and I they don't know for sure what it is that causes it, although they insist on checking my kidneys every time... even though we're well aware that they're not the problem. My question is, do any of you have any tips for dealing with it? It's still hurting me a lot today and I can't move too much as I keep getting pain radiating from the middle of back.

I have a condition called oseoarthritis in my spine which is also very painful and I have to take incrediblily strong pain killers however mot of the time they dont work... If you have had constent pain for over 30 days and painkillers dont work you could have chronic pain (i have that also) which means your nervous system is working overtime and sending constant pain signals...
They best way I have found to treat it without drugs is heat.... You can get great beanie heat packs you put in the microwave, then when they are in place gently start to stretch the painful area...
hope this helps even a little bit

silly question - as you've obviously thought of this before - have you been to see a chiropractor (it could be something simple like something slipping out of line)? Someone i know who is a drummer was getting pains and it turned out he'd had a slipped disc and bone spurs were growing...
I used to get a lot of back pain and couldn't think how it was happening - it turns out it was because of those (awful!!) diagonal rucksack bags (you know the ones with one strap that go across you) and it had pulled all my spine out of alignment... Could anything you carry be contributing to the pain?
Hope you find a solution, and the pain goes away soon, doll!

Have you had an xray to check out the structure of your spine? Also are you getting muscular spasmodic pain or neuralgia?

Pain...
Hey Honey,
I can really empathise with you as far as pain is concerned as I have dealt with the problems caused by bone grafts in my shoulder and their affect on my back.
If you have had pain for a long time (ie months) may I suggest you ask your GP to refer you to a Pain Management Clinic? They are very good and they have access to prescribing pain relief if necessary, as well as therapies such as Hydrotherapy, Physio etc to try and address the root cause of your pain.
The other thing I have found to be good is a TENS machine - it is pain free and sends little waves of stimulus through your muscles which blocks the pain.
I really think it is worth seeing the Pain Management Clinic if it has gone on for a long time though, as they are in a far better position to deal with chronic pain.
I hope you get some relief soon honey,
Love,

The thing with my back pain is that it comes and goes. It strikes at random and totally cripples me. I've been dealing with it since I was about 12, and I'm now 21. I've been to the doctors and the hospital numerous times over the years and they can never agree on what's causing it. Some of these suggestions sound promising though. I like the idea of the TENS machine, that's used as pain relief in child labour sometimes isn't it?

tens are a really good option...definately heat though...i have suffered back pain since i was 11 because of hypermobility (basically im too bendy) and hyperlordosis (really deeply curved small of my back apparently) ive always found that stretching and heat were good options for me...acupuncture was a really helpful therapy too but the thing that has worked the best was reiki healing...i cant believe the difference that reiki made to my whole life not just physically but mentally too...i guess its just try a bitof everything till you find what works for you honey, good luck. xxx

osteopath?
Hey buttonz!
im a holistic therapist by trade but i work in a private health and stress clinic which offers everything from reiki to acupuncture and osteopathy, have you tried any of these?
I agree with the comments of the other lovely ladies on here, tens is worth a try and by far the the thing tht provides most relief for my clients is different forms of heat (heat lamps, warming oils, paraffin wax treatment etc).
I see youve been passed between doctors and hospitals but have you tried an osteopath? This was the only thing that worked for me (i too had severe pain that would come and go and take my breath away). Osteopaths will be able to tell you whether the pain is rooted in the muscles, spine or nervous system and give you the best treatment tailored to you.
Really hope any of this helps, i too had the pain from a really young age (14) and its awful xxx good luck
