Its evil. After 2 weeks I was at work and I got a shooting pain in my chest, so much that I doubled up (not good as I was in a class full of children at the time). Turns out it had worked its way out and was stabbing me. The doctor helpfully informed me, after I had gone through the whole malakary, that coils often fall out if the woman hasnt had any kids. Cheers for the heads up, dude. Mirena emits hormones to affect the local area, but there are also a small amount go into the blood, so thats probably the issue with your moods. The coil was probably pushed out by the heavy period, that happens alot. Maybe its just one of those things, I know alot of people who really like the coil. Sometimes things just dont suit your insides or hormones etc. xxx

oh my god... what a lot of horrible stories... I cant beleive so many people have had adverse affects from them.. Im def not going back now!!!!.... I had decided anyway that the coil was not for me, but this has reaffirmed it.....
ok, not into condoms and am too scared to just go on body temp, as I am very happy with two babies and no more!!...
I think a little trip to the docs is needed and maybe a little snip for the husband - or me!!....

contraceptives and coil
Hello ladies!
I thought I would share my experiences with you, starting with the most recent:
Mirena: I had a mirena coil fitted in 2007. The fitting itself was agony, partly due to the fact that I do not have children, but also because the info booklet it states you will be given a local anaesthetic; the doctor refused on the grounds that it would be equally as painful as the insertion itself. My mother has has 2 mirena coils, and was given a local on both occasions. She claims that the injection and the insertion did not hurt at all, but that removal was a bit uncomfortable. She also claims that she is putting on weight after having the most recent coil fitted, and on reflection, put weight on with the first but blamed middle age spread. My experience was a stabbing pain and dull ache worse than any period pain for about 2 months after the fitting, which is aparently completely normal. I had no periods for about a year, and now have irregular light but very painful periods. On the plus side, my boobs are bigger but get very painful when my period is due.
Sub-dermal implant: I had this fitted in 2005 in the UK, as I was told that I would not be able to have a coil as the angle of my cervix would make insertion pretty much impossible. Initially the implant was fine, but I soon developed severe depression, a larger amount of agression than before and emotional oversensitivity. This made me an abosolute nightmare to live with, and my hormonal outbursts ruined my relationship with my uni housemates, who I have not spoken to since then. After a year, I developed ridiculously heavy periods (I would need to change super large tampons every 1-2 hours) that were very painful. I also found that it would become displaced when lifting heavy objects- I spent a year in Spain as part of my degree, and moved from one area of Madrid to another on the metro, and found the implant had moved from my upper arm to the inside of my elbow, I had to push it back into place myself as I was unable to register with a spanish doctor. After enduring 6 months of heavy periods and a year of hormones that turned my psychotic, I decided to have it removed and replace it with the mirena coil, leaving a small scar like a cigarette burn on the inside of my arm. I still have the indent left behind in the muscle.
Depo-Provera injections- I used these from 2001-2004/5, starting when I was 16. I put on weight and had a small amount of breakthrough bleeding every day, and severe moodswings near the time that my next injection was due. After a year or two, I found I would lactate every three-four months for a few weeks, and found myself having blood tests, ultrasounds and non- surgical internal investigations, all of which were inconclusive. The doctors at uni were digusted that I had been using the injection for so long, and sent me for a bone density scan as they are linked with osteoprosis. luckily everythin was fine, but my sister who had used them for longer and gone to the local university has never been questioned about bonje dendity risks.
Microgynon (combined) Pill: I used these aged 15-16 for a few months; these gave me nausea akin to morning sickness, acne and sore boobs. Due to constant nausea, I opted for depo- provera.
Hope you have found this useful, and that it will help you to find the contraceptive method that it right for you.

What an interesting thread! I have been pondering changing from the Pill which I have been taking for a lot of years. I read some literature from the GP, but in the end I am sticking with the Pill, the other methods carry to high a risk of accidental pregnancy for me. I especially don't want a coil as they seem to carry a risk of falling out altogether. The Pill has suited me, and even though it's unnatural, I haven't had a period for years. So there is never a 'wrong time of the month' for me ;o)
I think you must always get information from your GP (and no-one else) and think what suits YOUR circumstances. If in doubt, get the condoms out!

Just to clarify, Persona is not body temp measurement, it's a hormone measurement from urine, and when used correctly is AS EFFECTIVE as the pill.
If you are sure you have completed your family however, vasectomy sounds like the best option! Female sterilisation is more complicated, more risky and is invasive surgery.Twirly, whirly, sparkly, Oooh!

Hi Claire, obviously as a bloke I cannot comment personally but, my ex partner got one fitted as she (wait for it) didn't trust condoms.............She had no problems at all with it in, maybe it was as she said, due to her being a big girl as it were, I don't know. She fell pregnant in 1991
Whilst using the coil...........

im glad this thread has popped up because im going to see the doctor on thursday to decide what to do about my heavy excruciating periods. my partner has had the snip (due to the risk of having another child with CF-or another set of twins lol!!) so it isnt the contraceptive side of things that i am concerned about.
i think that being sterilized is very final, and i would hate to do anything so drastic while i am so young (22) because, although i would like to think that me and my dear boyfriend will be together-i have to be realistic!
i was considering the coil, and this is what im ging to see the doctor about.
i have had several types of the pill, from when i was sixteen-which was when i started my periods and since then my cycles have never settled into a regular cycle. with the pill, i put on weight and got bad spots and the pmt got alot worse. so i stopped that.
not sure what to do now, all these stories have made me abit nervous of this coil business!!xx
