Mervyn Peak (yes he of Gormenghast fame) did a set of amazing illustration for Alice In Wonderland some of which are currently on display at The University of Sheffield (along with the national fairground archive - Home Page :: National Fairground Archive) well worth a visit if your in the neighborhood

My copies of Alice have the Peake illustrations, they're wonderful.

Before I found out about the exhibition I had no idea he was an illustrator - I only knew of him as an author. But the illustrations are (for me) perfect for Alice - they have just the perfect blend of quirkiness and mallevolence where most others seem to fall too far in one of the other directions.
As a taster here's a snippit of his mad hatters tea party

Ooh I have his illustrated versions of Alice as well, somewhere ... it's been a long time and several house moves since I last saw them though >_< Possibly a day trip to Sheffield is required!
But how could you not know he was an illustrator - did you never see his illustrations in Gormenghast? They were one of the main reasons I started reading it!

Following up on the Alice theme there is an absolutely excellent adaption of Alice at the Crucible in Sheffield at the moment which I would recomend to anyone in the area who won't go all daily mail at the thought of a re-imagining!
