Hi, I don't know how many of you make use of your public library, but we are in danger of losing many of our libraries. They are uniquely impartial, accessible to anyone of any age, ability and background and are the professional community resource for accessing literacy, information and sources of education, inspiration and recreation. The government's cuts to local authority budgets mean that libraries are seen as a 'soft target' by many and are taking cuts disproportionately bigger than other departments. Moreover, there is a lot of pressure to hand libraries over to communities to be run by volunteers instead of qualified and paid staff, which not only throws into question the scope and professionalism of the service, but also the impartiality and accessibility of the service offered.

The WI have a petition for people to sign - if 100,000 signatures are reached then the matter has to be taken to parliament. To sign it, please visit Petition In Support of Public Libraries - e-petitions

Thanks very much,
Lily x
