I don't know how you dare... bringing that discussoin to this place

My son has a love of jaffa cakes, and after asking him I'm assured that it's a cake (if left out, it goes hard) I would like to say though, he's never had any long enough to leave out and go hard!

Really? Wow! I still lean towards cake [frequently and pathetically]. It may be a personal thing - but biscuits to me should be crunchy - with occasional strayings towards chewy. I worship the humble Jaffa Cake - but as a cake type product. I feel maybe in comparison to a gateaux [cake or dessert - ooh - the boundaries blur] or a gorgeous sliceable sponge cake, the jaffa is at the lower end of the scale [technically] - but it still speaks 'snack-cake' to me.

    Q. Are Jaffa cakes biscuits.

    A. No, no the're not. Apart from being called cakes they obviously have a sponge base. Granted they appear to be some kind of luxury biscuit being chocolate covered and shipping in a box.

This was in the FAQ section of the link

James, James... see what you've started - it's anarchy! haha

All I know is that Jaffa cakes are neither Fairy cakes nor Cupcakes. The poor Fairy cake is having quite enough problems already without the Jaffa cake lobby jumping on board.
Please start your own thread, where you may discuss lemon/lime versus the tradiitional orange, Macvities versus own-brand and the stance of the Inland Revenue to your hearts' content.
Please take your nasty factory-made confections elsewhere! Unless anyone can come up wth a recipe for home-made Jaffa cakes that is......

I remember that debate originally started because of tax...cakes are taxed at a higher rate than biscuits as they are a luxury item (so are most biscuits nowadays!) So Jaffa cakes are cakes Masquerading as biscuits (unsuccessfully I might add!) because McVities were trying to dodge tax...but who can blame them for that!

As for Cupcakes Vs Fairy Cakes they both contain the word cake so I'm not too fussed either way! Cupcakes are a heaver mixture with more calories they have milk in and quite often chocolate melted in and you need to add baking powder to make them rise. Funny Viva that you should mention them being on steroids as I think the bodybuilders on steroids also have difficulty rising!!

    Xx
