I haven't seen this, but I'm often tempted to rent it just because I've heard there's a reference to Xanadu in it (I suspect it's one line somewhere). But I feel like a loser renting a movie for that reason alone!!

Tempest - ah of course! Muriel's Wedding! What a great film. I remember seeing that in the cinema with a group of about half a dozen friends and I was the only one who liked it. And talking of Toni Collette - Connie & Carla! It's camp nonsense and doesn't really have a shred of originality in it, but I *heart* it!

Heather - I'm glad you mentioned Freeway. I saw it amongst my DVDs but wondered if it really counted! I love that film, it's so far removed from the wholesome Ms Witherspoon we see today!

Oooh is that good. It's one of those films I've always thought I 'ought' to watch but never gotten round to it. I might have to make more effort.

It is a wonderful love story. The time on the couch when E. Edward Grey firsts confronts Lee about her self-harming and tells her she's never to hurt herself is one of the most tenderest (terrible grammar) in any love film. I love how they portray each others understanding of how the other one ticks. The making of the bed at the end is just beautiful.

And her power and control at the end, from this poor child who 'has always suffered' - just glorious to see.

I have to say the film really helped me. As a teenager I self-harmed and I've always been a freak. Watching this film gives me hope that I (and others) can find happiness outside the normal world.

The film not only helped me first come out about my depressions to my husband (I sort of hid what I was going through from everyone for years - how they didn't realise I still don't quite understand) but it prompted me getting properly diagnosed and am now getting proper help.

Maggie Gyllenhaal being so pleasing on the eye and a bit of 'slap and tickle' are just the icing on the cake.....FANTASTIC MOVIE
The Russian Doll Lass - like Shrek's onion, but with sequins...

Miss Carrie - it is a very enjoyable flick, whether there is just one line or not. It's not Film Noir, but kind of an homage to that. Some great bits of situation comedy - esp when Downey Junior finds the dead body (which they have dumped) mysteriously in his lavvie. He is taking a pee when he sees her slumped in the corner and spins around (as you would) and covers the poor girl in pee.

And he gets his finger shot off and it is evidence left at a crime scene.....but not for long.

If you like movies that are a bit unusual in concept and funny in a dark way, you'll like it - with or without the Xanadu reference.

I really love when they write those letters to each other that they'd never let the other see. They're just so awkward around each other and really sweet. The characters worked wonderfully together.

I think when I first saw the movie I saw a lot of myself in Lee, I had a lot of problems with self harm and feeling lost, and swamped. I loved how she let herself be rescued, but still maintained (and regained) independence and spark.
