    Default Favourite artists?

    Hi!

Inspired by being thrown head first into my crazy jam-packed Art course, I was wondering who everyone's favourite artists were?

Hopefully I will learn about a few that I can use for my assignment.

    My list:

    Louise Borgeois
    Tracey Emin
    Anthony Gormley
    Barbara Kruger
    Dave McKean
    Alex Pardee
    Marc Quinn

Anyway enough gratuitous abuse! Some I do like:

    Helmut Newton,
    David LaChapelle
Andrea Duncan (this is one of my all time favourite works - a karyotype made of babies socks and gloves)
    Roy Lichtenstein
Frank Lloyd Wright (do architects count?)
    Frank Gehry (ditto!)
    Tamara de Lempicka

more as I think of them!

Did you see her recent interview with Piers Morgan (The Dark Side of Fame broadcast 29th Sept on BBC One)? I must say that I had a bit of an aversion to her as a person having seen so many TV programmes where she turned up pissed and she came across as being all gob and no brain. During the Morgan interview she said that she was giving the booze a rest and she expressed herself with both dignity and clarity. Of course everyone has different viewpoints on what constitutes this ephemeral classification of 'art' but on a personal level my current flawed understanding of it is an endeavour for its own ends that involves a physical or mental craft. I think that it is more difficult to assess the mental processes involved in more conceptual pieces because you can't compare the depiction to any sort of reality as you can in a painting/drawing/sculpture, you can't necessarily admire the aesthetic qualities or appreciate the workmanship. Either it's your bag or not. I know that work should really stand on its own but my appreciation of Emin's efforts were really enhanced from hearing her speak about both her art and her life.

Mmm, I'm still at work. Think I'll go home now. A chat about art sure makes a refreshing change from resizing .jpgs!

The Holy Trinity of art:

    Franz Marc

    Marc Chagall

Carl Henning Pedersen (my absolute favourite)

Also love Joseph Beuys, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee...oh and a local artist, Terry Duffy. Everyone should see his work. I'm not sure how famous he is outside of Liverpool. Loads others that I probably can't think of right now.

    I do!

There is this whole "Ooh we all hate Emin" bandwagon which really annoys me. People go "Ooh look a messy bed, she's rubbish" without actually even outting any thought into it.

Bed isn't even my favourite. My absolutely favourite is "Exploration of the Soul". It made me cry when I saw it, and no doubt would again.

A lot of her work has very personal meanings that I can relate to.

I'm sure she is actually very decent. Is not my bag though thats for sure.
Leonardo da Vinci was pretty handy with an HB. Be interesting to see what the view of Emin is in say 400 years.

Salvador Dali ranks pretty highly with me.

    M. C. Escher is up there too - even if he did consider himself a mathematician, he prodcued some beautiful work. I did a project on his work at GCSE and it was incredibly interesting to see how he produced the work he did ...
